Kitten Seeks Rescue from Couple Walking Their Dog

Last October, Brendan and Kayla Dunn were setting off for an evening stroll with their dog, Cora, around their neighborhood in Philadelphia. To their surprise, they encountered an unexpected, fluffy newcomer at their doorstep—a small stray cat desperately seeking their attention.

“When we walked out our front door, she came running out from across the street, crying over and over,” Kayla shared with The Dodo. “She was skin and bones.”

A Timid Encounter

With Cora by their side, Brendan and Kayla were immediately concerned for the cat’s wellbeing. Unwilling to turn a blind eye, Brendan dashed to the nearest Walgreens, leaving Kayla and Cora to comfort the kitten.

“She was very skittish but seemed curious and eventually came close to me and let me pet her briefly,” said Kayla. “She seemed friendly.”

Nourishment and New Beginnings

Brendan soon returned with some cat food, which the little one quickly devoured. Recognizing her exhaustion and hunger, Kayla gently carried the kitten, later named Callie, to their garage for temporary shelter.

The Dunns initially intended to provide her a safe space overnight, but Callie’s presence began weaving its way into their hearts. “We were not planning on getting a cat, but I was already starting to love her,” Kayla admitted.

Addressing Health Challenges

At the vet the next day, they discovered Callie wasn’t microchipped and had been fending for herself. Despite this, her health presented challenges, including fleas and ringworm, both requiring elaborate treatments.

Back home, rigorous quarantine measures were in place for Callie in the garage to prevent the spread of flea infestation. “She managed really well and was always friendly from the beginning,” noted Kayla. “She would rub her head affectionately on my hands.”

A Journey Towards Trust and Healing

With love and perseverance, Callie learned to trust, enduring daily treatments for her ringworm. This progress accentuated the Dunns’ dedication and her resilience.

The task involved regular cleaning, lime sulfur dip baths, and medication. “Managing the spread was vital because we had a dog too,” Kayla explained. “She was a trooper the entire time …”

Embracing a New Life

After two months of diligent care, Callie was ringworm-free and ready for spaying, paving the way to explore the rest of the house. As her quarantine shifted from the garage to the bathroom, she gradually acquainted with her furry sibling, Cora, building familiarity and comfort.

As Callie healed from surgery, the big moment arrived: she was officially welcomed to the Dunn family home, marking the end of a transformative journey.

Nearly a year has passed since Callie first meandered into their lives. Once a frail kitten, she now flourishes, weighing in as a healthy, cuddly companion.

Although Callie was once a stray, she now thrives with a loving family—a testament to resilience and the power of compassion. “We truly feel so grateful to have her in our family, and she is a symbol of resilience to us,” Kayla expressed. “Through it all, she’s maintained her sweet and affectionate nature. She’s the sweetest girl.”
