Maggie the Senior Chow Chow

When Rocky Kanaka met Maggie May, an 11-year-old Chow Chow, she sat quietly in her shelter kennel, a gentle soul hidden beneath a thick coat of black fur. Despite her teddy bear appearance, Maggie’s fur concealed painful mats and her nails were alarmingly overgrown. Rocky, arriving to assist with her grooming, never imagined he’d witness a touching family reunion in the making.

Maggie had only been at the shelter for about 24 hours. Her journey there was tangled with a backstory of her longtime person moving to hospice care, leaving Maggie in the hands of someone else who later brought her to the shelter. Yet, what seemed a straightforward case of rehoming a senior dog soon evolved into a remarkable story of reunion.

Rocky approached Maggie with gentle care, aiming to win her trust before attempting any grooming. Although she wasn’t aggressive, Maggie showed little interest in her surroundings or in the treats Rocky offered. Her physical state was concerning; the mats in her coat required attention, and her cracked nails needed trimming.

Rocky stayed patient, allowing Maggie time to adapt. Finally, Maggie sniffed a treat and even let him pet her—a small but hopeful sign. When Rocky’s teammate Alexis found her name in the shelter records and began calling her Maggie May, there was a noticeable shift as the senior Chow Chow became more engaged, even offering a slight wag of her tail.

An Unexpected Reunion

Just as Rocky was gaining Maggie’s trust, an unexpected visitor arrived at the shelter claiming Maggie as family. The story was more complex than anyone initially realized. Maggie’s original owner had passed after entering hospice care. The family, attempting to return her home, faced a series of mishaps, including a vehicle breakdown in Texas. Conflicting stories emerged, involving U-Hauls and police, eventually leading to Maggie’s surrender by someone overwhelmed by her care. The underlying truth, however, was clear—Maggie’s family was desperately trying to find her.

A Journey to Rescue

Maggie’s family went to great lengths to bring her home. A nephew drove from Oklahoma, a 26-hour trip, to reunite with Maggie. Though thrilled about the reunion, Rocky was still concerned about Maggie’s grooming needs. He offered to cover the expenses for a grooming session in California, but the nephew had to return to work. Instead, Rocky suggested arranging a grooming appointment near their home, ensuring Maggie would receive the necessary care. The family agreed and kept in touch to update Rocky on her progress.

Happy and Groomed

Once on their way back home, the family updated Rocky, elated to be only three hours away. They scheduled Maggie’s grooming for Sunday. Soon after, Rocky received confirmation: Maggie was receiving the care she needed. The family shared a picture of her being groomed, bringing closure to a heartwarming story. Maggie, once withdrawn, was now a joyful dog, wagging her tail around her family and other pets.
