Shelter Cat Finds Solace in Former Owner’s Shoes
In a heartwarming story from West Cornwall, Connecticut, a cat named Ming has captured the hearts of many with his unusual bond to a pair of shoes. Originally adopted by a family from The Little Guild animal shelter back in 2019, Ming’s journey took a turn seven years later when his family had to move into a senior community and, regretfully, surrender him.
When Ming returned to The Little Guild, he brought along a pair of his dad’s shoes. Initially, the shelter workers were skeptical of the family’s claim that these shoes were Ming’s favorite. However, Kassidy Humphrey, the animal care coordinator at The Little Guild, soon realized the truth of this claim.
“[T]hey brought a pair of shoes that were the husband’s shoes, and they were like, ‘Oh, he’s obsessed with these shoes,’” said Humphrey. “And we were like, ‘OK, sure.’”
It turned out that Ming’s affection for the shoes was genuine. The shelter staff placed the shoes in Ming’s kennel, and the feline immediately found comfort in them by burying his face into them, relishing the familiar scent of his old home.
While Ming adapted to his new environment, the shoes served as a source of solace. Humphrey commented, “He was rolling in them, and they probably smelled like the owner, too.” Beyond his love for the shoes, Ming quickly showcased his affectionate nature, becoming a cherished resident at the shelter.
Despite being an older cat at seven years old, Ming’s gentle disposition captured the interest of an older gentleman who visited The Little Guild. Having recently lost his 23-year-old cat, the man was seeking companionship.
“[He’d] just lost his cat, and I believe his cat was 23 years old,” Humphrey mentioned. “He was really missing that companionship.”
The bond between Ming and his new owner formed quickly, with the gentleman deciding to give Ming a forever home. Ming spent only a month at the shelter before moving into his new abode. Initially, Ming was a bit timid in his new environment, choosing to hide behind the couch. However, he soon realized that he was in a safe place, and his relationship with his new dad blossomed.
The Little Guild staff is overjoyed with the outcome, knowing that Ming has found a loving place to continue his journey. Humphrey shared, “He’s so happy that he has the companionship with him and a friend to hang out with.”
