Abandoned Box With Note Leads to Heartbreaking Rescue Discovery

A Rainy Day Discovery in Missouri

It was a gloomy, rainy spring day in Missouri when a volunteer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) set out on a routine walk with one of the resident dogs. The volunteer could never have anticipated the unsettling discovery that lay ahead on the shelter’s grounds.

While on the property, the volunteer’s eyes caught a suspiciously taped cardboard box resting near the path. The box was sealed tight, with no holes for ventilation, prompting immediate concern.

The Note That Sparked Urgency

As the volunteer approached the box, their heart sank upon seeing a handwritten note affixed to the top.

According to Natalie Thomson, SRSL’s Chief Communications Officer, the note read:
“Found [two] strays. They are about 4-5 months old. Sorry for just dropping them off, but I can’t keep them due to my apartment not allowing pets.”

Now turned into a rescue mission, shelter staff quickly rushed the box inside. Since the container was completely sealed without any ventilation holes, they feared the worst—that the animals inside might be suffocating.

Thankfully, their worst fears were not realized. Once the box was opened, two spirited and friendly cats sprang out, eager to escape their confined space.

Meet Amazon and Prime

The charming felines were quickly named Amazon and Prime in honor of their unexpected cardboard arrival. According to Thomson, the two are 7-month-old male cats and appeared to be in good health despite the distressing circumstances.

The shelter team gave them a thorough wellness check, and to their relief, both cats had no injuries or visible signs of illness.

Thriving in Foster Care

The happy ending continued when a foster stepped up to take both Amazon and Prime into their home. There, the duo quickly began adjusting to a safe and loving indoor environment. The bonded cats are sticking together and learning about trust, companionship, and the comforts of home life.

“They’re doing great!” said Thomson. “One of our wonderful fosters came and picked them both up, so they are learning about being an indoor cat together.”

Available for Adoption

Today, Amazon and Prime are not just surviving—they are thriving. Now safe, loved, and healthy, they are officially available for adoption. SRSL hopes to find them a forever home where they can continue their journey together with the comfort and care they deserve.

Despite the troubling way they were abandoned, the swift action of the SRSL volunteer and staff turned a near-tragedy into a touching story of hope and resilience.
