Abandoned Kitten With Heartbreaking Note Found Outside Shelter Door

A Surprising Discovery at Huron Humane Society

It was a typical morning at the Huron Humane Society in Alpena, Michigan, until a staff member arrived to open up and noticed something strange. Sitting near the shelter’s entrance was what looked to be a food donation box and a suspiciously taped-up box labeled “Smirnoff.” Initial confusion quickly turned into concern when the staff member realized the box was empty — or so it seemed.

Empty donation box next to whiteboard

Behind a whiteboard displaying the shelter’s hours, a tiny kitten was scurrying about. He had apparently escaped from the box and had been wandering, with no food or proper shelter. Thankfully, he was found before it was too late.

The Note Left Behind

Next to the taped box was a note. It explained why the kitten had been abandoned and offered a glimpse into the difficult situation his former owners faced. The note read:

“We’re sorry we couldn’t keep him. The previous owner didn’t tell us he had leukemia while we already have another cat. He has a few fleas but we gave him a dawn bath. He’s very playful and loves cuddling, his favorite toy is the mouse we gave him and likes the food we put with.”

Heartbreaking note left with kitten

The kitten had been named Ashtray by his former caregivers and was described as affectionate and lively despite a possible diagnosis of feline leukemia — a condition that is contagious among cats and typically prevents multi-cat households from taking in affected animals.

Immediate Care and a New Name

Concerned for the kitten’s health, the shelter staff sprang into action. They placed him in a warm carrier with food, water, and a heating pad. Although slightly underweight, he was otherwise in good condition. In the spirit of Halloween, the staff gave him a fittingly spooky-yet-cute name: Freddy Krueger.

The Huron Humane Society shared the story on their social media pages, expressing gratitude that someone chose to bring the kitten to a shelter — but also noting the importance of surrendering animals responsibly.

Freddy Krueger the kitten at shelter

“First, we want to say thank you — you made the right choice by bringing them somewhere safe instead of leaving them on the side of the road,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “But… we need to be honest — this still isn’t the right way to do it … The right way to surrender a pet (to us or any shelter) is to call first. We’ll help. That’s what we’re here for. Dropping off an animal — even at a shelter — is never the right answer.”

Next Steps for Freddy Krueger

Freddy is now in good hands as the shelter carefully monitors his health and awaits confirmation of his diagnosis. Although feline leukemia can be serious, with proper care and management, many cats go on to live long, happy lives.

Freddy is described just as the note said — playful, affectionate, and full of love. Soon, he may be ready to find his forever home, whether that’s with a family prepared to manage his special needs or through a sanctuary where he can live safely among other similar cats.

Important Lessons About Pet Surrender

This touching and heartbreaking incident is a reminder of the challenges both pet owners and animal shelters face. If you are ever in a position where you can no longer provide care to an animal, make sure to follow the proper surrender process. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization — they are there to help, not to judge.

Thanks to some roaming instincts, a warm-hearted shelter worker, and a chase around a whiteboard, Freddy Krueger is now safe and loved. His story could have ended tragically, but instead, it is one of hope, resilience, and kindness.
