Abandoned Kittens Rescued by Shelter Volunteer on Dirt Road

Last month, an unexpected discovery greeted a volunteer starting her early morning shift at the BC SPCA. As she neared the front gate, she spotted a small grocery basket sitting on the dirt road. Curiosity piqued, she decided to take a closer look.

Covered by an animal cage and sealed tightly with duct tape, the basket concealed an unexpected surprise. Peering inside, she found four tiny kitten faces staring back at her, their movements restricted by the tight quarters.

Quickly realizing the kittens’ plight, the volunteer acted swiftly, bringing them inside for examination. The BC SPCA team sprang into action, ensuring a thorough check-up for each kitten. Miraculously, despite their ordeal, the kittens appeared to be healthy and robust.

According to Angela Mather, BC SPCA’s center manager, the kittens appeared to have been indoor pets, likely not far removed from their mother’s care. While no one endorses leaving animals outside a shelter instead of calling ahead, the team was relieved these kittens found safe harbor with them. Such situations underline the importance of community resources available through shelters, which can prevent desperate measures.

Kitten Adoption and Naming

The BC SPCA team, providing immediate care for the abandoned kittens, decided to name them after the location they were found—right at the gate of the shelter. Thus, the kittens were dubbed Hatch, Portal, Wicket, and Lattice.

With their weight and size indicating they were about nine weeks old, the BC SPCA staff determined the kittens were weaned and ready for adoption. Thus began the kittens’ journey into foster-to-adopt homes, where they started settling into their playful routines.

“They play, they nap, and repeat and repeat and repeat,” shared Mather, highlighting the vibrancy and health of the kittens now in loving care. Thanks to the rapid response and dedication of the BC SPCA team, these once-abandoned kittens have a second chance at a happy life.

Their story is a heartening reminder of the significant impact of animal shelters and the collective efforts of volunteers, staff, and community in ensuring vulnerable animals receive the care they desperately need.
