Adorable Cat With ‘Airplane Ears’ Seeks Loving Forever Home

Meet Wonder – The Cat With the Flattest Ears and the Biggest Heart

Every feline resident at the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) has their own unforgettable charm. But when a senior tabby named Wonder arrived at the Queens location, he captured everyone’s attention immediately—thanks to his permanent “airplane ears” and touching backstory.

A Painful Past and a Hopeful New Chapter

About 70 days ago, officers from the NYPD brought Wonder to the ACC after the tabby tragically became homeless due to his owner’s passing. His initial arrival revealed just how deeply he was affected by the changes in his life. Shelter staff described him as tense and anxious, with his body stiff and ears perpetually flattened to the sides whenever someone approached.

“He initially displayed a high level of FAS (fear, anxiety, and stress), hissing with a tense face and body, ears flat to the side each time his kennel was approached,” shared Alec Rusnack of ACC.

The Power of Patience and Treats

Fortunately, the ACC feline behavior team knew how to work with shy and stressed cats like Wonder. Through a combination of patience, kindness, a gentle touch, and a good number of squeeze-up treats, they gradually earned his trust and initiated a change in his demeanor.

“With time, patience, positive interactions, and lots of love from our feline behavior team and dedicated cat volunteers, he has made wonderful progress,” said Rusnack.

A Unique Expression: The Everlasting Airplane Ears

Despite his progress in trusting people and becoming more open to interaction, Wonder’s ears remained in their distinctive flattened state—a look that might normally imply frustration or fear. But in his case, it’s just how his face is naturally expressive. So the staff decided to clarify things for visitors.

They added a lighthearted note to his kennel that let would-be adopters know what to expect:

“I am actually a sweet old boy with resting airplane ears — I’ll greet you with a hiss, but I actually just want pets! Say hi slow [and] I’ll love you.”

Breaking Through the Barriers

Volunteer Chelsey was among those moved by the note and decided to give Wonder a chance despite his initial nervous behavior. When she first met him, Wonder was crouched in the upper corner of his kennel, hissing at anyone who approached. But after reading the note, she decided to try giving him some gentle pets—and was surprised when he happily accepted them.

“Wonder is a true softy,” Chelsey said. It’s now clear to those who spend time with him that underneath his tense posture and unique ears is a loving, gentle soul just waiting for the right person to help him blossom fully.

Hope for a Patient Forever Home

As one of the longest-residing cats currently at ACC, Wonder has made incredible strides. Now, he’s simply waiting for a calm, patient adopter to come along and give him the loving home he deserves. According to ACC staff, he would thrive best with someone experienced with cats—especially those who may need time to come out of their shell.

“Wonder would do best in a calm, patient home with an experienced cat adopter who understands that shy cats sometimes need a little extra time to open up,” Rusnack emphasized.

Wonder’s Journey Is Ongoing

For now, Wonder continues residing at ACC, his airplane ears forever on display and his little heart wide open for someone to notice him. Staff and volunteers alike remain enchanted by him each day.

“Despite his expressive ears, Wonder is a sweetheart once he feels comfortable!” Rusnack added.

With support from the ACC team and the compassionate volunteers who take time to understand him, Wonder is slowly but surely blooming into the companion he was meant to be. And when the right home comes along—one that sees past the airplane ears and into the heart of a sweet senior kitty—Wonder will be ready for his next adventure.
