Adorable Shelter Cat Overlooked 700 Days for Unique Smile
Meet Cordova: A Gentle Soul with a One-of-a-Kind Smile
At Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, one sweet and serene feline has captured the hearts of shelter staff but is still waiting to charm the right adopter. Cordova, a calm and cuddly kitty, has spent more than 700 days at the shelter hoping to find her forever home — and her journey hasn’t been an easy one.
A Rough Beginning That Revealed Her Resilience
Cordova’s story began with heartbreak. When she was just one year old, she and another cat were found locked in a dog crate outside the shelter gates. Left to fend for themselves, it was Anjanette Mendoza, the cat care specialist at Valley Animal Center, who discovered and lovingly brought them into safety.
While the other cat quickly found a new family, Cordova’s journey took a different path. She required extensive dental care, which ultimately led to the removal of most of her top teeth. The result? A distinctive underbite that causes her tiny pink tongue to peek out, giving her a unique and endearing expression.
Her Quirky Look Is Pure Charm
Despite what some may see as a flaw, Cordova’s underbite has absolutely no effect on her health or temperament. In fact, the staff at the shelter find it utterly adorable. Valley Animal Center once described her on Instagram saying, “[S]he’s the sweetest girl with the cutest little tongue-out derp.”
Sadly, not everyone shares this appreciation for her unique smile. While most of the shelter’s residents are adopted in just a short time, Cordova’s longer stay suggests that her appearance may be deterring potential adopters.
She’s Calm, Reserved, and Full of Love
In addition to her standout look, Cordova’s gentle nature also sets her apart. She’s not the kind of cat to rush up to strangers. Instead, she prefers to quietly nap by the window, taking in the sunlight from the comfort of her cozy bed. But don’t mistake her peaceful demeanor for lack of affection—Cordova is a loving companion who simply needs time to warm up to new faces.
As Mendoza shares, “Most of the time, we find her in a nice cozy little bed, looking out the window.”
Thousands Love Her—But She Still Waits
Recently, Valley Animal Center posted about Cordova on Instagram, and the response was overwhelming. Admirers flooded the comments:
- “She is super cute,” one commenter wrote. “Looks like a little vampire.”
- Others called her a “derpy queen” and praised her charming look.
And yet, after 700 days, she’s still waiting. The shelter staff hopes that someone will recognize the beauty in Cordova’s uniqueness and bring her home at last.
The Perfect Home for Cordova
Cordova would thrive in a calm, quiet home without dogs. She is great with other cats and would make an ideal companion for someone looking for a low-maintenance, relaxed, and affectionate friend. Given her gentle spirit, she’s not likely to demand attention—but she’ll gladly accept it when offered.
A Bit of Hope and Endless Love Ahead
The staff at Valley Animal Center continue to care for Cordova with love and patience, but they know she deserves a family of her own. “It would be really exciting, I think, for everybody that works here currently to see her go home finally,” Mendoza said.
