Adventurous Kitten Joins Campers After Refusing To Leave Tent

A Special Anniversary Surprise in the Agafay Desert

When Francesca and Alex Nardi traveled to Morocco in September to celebrate their second wedding anniversary, they anticipated a peaceful vacation filled with timeless memories and captivating photographs. However, they never expected to return home with a surprise — a tiny orange kitten who would forever change their lives.

While camping under the stars in the Agafay desert, the couple encountered many stray cats, a common sight across Morocco. Yet, it was one determined little feline who wouldn’t be ignored. The orange kitten showed up outside their tent and refused to leave, essentially choosing them as her humans.

The kitten’s boldness enchanted the couple instantly. She followed them throughout the camp, even rubbing against their legs during dinner. It wasn’t long before she earned a name — Zahra, meaning “flower” in Arabic.

“She kind of became our little shadow,” Francesca shared. Whether they were walking along the path or resting in their tent, Zahra was never far away. She playfully popped in and out of desert bushes, making the couple laugh and ultimately winning their hearts.

When invited inside their tent, Zahra settled right into Alex’s lap and purred herself to sleep. That moment sealed her fate — she was no longer a stray. She was family.

Health Concerns and a Determined Plan

Francesca soon noticed that Zahra wasn’t just a charming companion — she was also ill. The kitten was alarmingly thin, with a swollen belly caused by tapeworms. Determined to help, Francesca vowed to get the kitten proper medical attention.

After flying back to New Jersey, Francesca couldn’t stop thinking about Zahra. She reached out to over 20 Moroccan veterinarians until one finally offered to help. This vet drove an hour to the campsite, retrieved Zahra, and began her treatment — including vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying.

Journey Home: From Desert to New Jersey

The next major hurdle was bringing Zahra to the U.S. After failing to find any flight volunteers, Alex decided to fly back to Morocco himself to retrieve her. But this journey wasn’t without challenges. The Moroccan government initially denied her export papers because Alex hadn’t been there in person earlier.

Thanks to the veterinarian’s quick thinking and kind-hearted strangers, Alex was able to collect Zahra. A final setback occurred at the airport when her pet carrier was deemed too large. After a quick rush to a pet store — where fatefully, the kitten’s passport was accidentally left behind in the old carrier — the pet shop owner raced on his moped to hand-deliver the passport to Alex just in time for boarding.

“It was just a lot of people willing to do right by a cute kitten,” Francesca said of the experience.

New Beginnings and a Bigger Purpose

Now safely in New Jersey, Zahra is thriving in her new home. But her story doesn’t end there. Francesca has partnered with ADAN, a Moroccan animal welfare organization, to launch a Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release (TNVR) program aimed at helping other stray cats like Zahra in the same desert camp.

“A street cat here is lucky to live seven years,” said ADAN volunteer Yassine Barnaoui. “There are so few protections for them and so many dangers.”

Barnaoui believes Zahra’s rescue has sparked something bigger. “She is not just a rescued cat — she is the beginning of something more.”
