Animal Rescuer Uncovers Surprising Find Inside Abandoned Backpack
Late one afternoon in May, the dedicated rescue team at Celia Hammond Animal Trust in the UK received an unexpected surge of calls and messages. Concerned passersby at a housing estate in East London had spotted an unusual sight — a domed plastic backpack, discreetly nestled off the road. On an uncharacteristically hot day, being trapped inside a plastic cat carrier could have dire consequences. The question loomed: how long had those tiny lives been hidden away? Time was of the essence.
Amanda Stevens, a dedicated volunteer with the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, immediately sprang into action. “This was obviously an emergency because they would have died from the heat in very little time,” Stevens explained in a conversation with The Dodo. “So it was just a case of getting there as quickly as I could.”
The Race Against Time
Upon her arrival, Stevens quickly assessed the dire condition of the kittens. “They were all squashed in together, and the heat was coming through this plastic dome … and it was an absolute heatwave,” Stevens recounted. “They were in a really bad way.” With swift precision, Stevens opened the carrier just enough to provide some much-needed air, ensuring the kittens remained safely inside.
Acting quickly, Stevens transported the kittens in her air-conditioned vehicle to the veterinary clinic managed by Celia Hammond Animal Trust, where the veterinary team stood ready to tackle the pressing challenge of heat exhaustion.
A Miraculous Recovery
Remarkably, each of the three kittens — later identified as boys named Napoleon, Prince, and Tom — made a full recovery. The rescue group shared the touching details of their journey on Facebook: “These three boys are around three months old, full of character, and completely devoted to one another. They eat together, sleep together, play together, and seek comfort in one another’s company.”
Recognizing the strong bond between the kittens, the team at Celia Hammond Animal Trust endeavored to rehome them together. “We wanted them to go as a trio because they’re very bonded and they really love each other,” Stevens emphasized. “It’s difficult to find homes for trios, but we have managed to find one.”
The Joy of Timely Intervention
For Amanda Stevens, the greatest reward was knowing she had reached the kittens just in time. “I was just pleased that I wasn’t too far away and I was able to get there straightaway, because they wouldn’t have survived very much longer,” she reflected. “But I sorted it out, and they were fine.”
