Beloved Police Comfort Dog Zena Tragically Killed in Crash
The Wilmington Police Department and the entire Massachusetts community are mourning an irreplaceable loss. Zena, a 3-year-old Bernedoodle and beloved comfort dog, tragically passed away following a devastating head-on collision in Tewksbury. The accident, which occurred on a Tuesday morning, not only claimed this invaluable canine team member but left her handler, Police Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, hospitalized with injuries.
Zena joined the Wilmington Police Department in 2022 as a puppy and quickly became an integral part of the force’s outreach effort. As an emotional support companion, she played a key role in fostering healing, connection, and psychological support for individuals dealing with trauma, mental health issues, addiction, and developmental disabilities. Her duties placed her at the heart of the community, working alongside Cavanaugh in the Health and Recovery Unit.
According to reports, the accident occurred when another driver allegedly crossed the double yellow line, crashing head-on into Cavanaugh’s Toyota Camry. Emergency services quickly responded, and thanks to Nero’s Law – which permits critically injured police dogs to be transported by ambulance – Zena was immediately brought to an animal hospital. Despite the swift response, the injuries she sustained were too severe, and she sadly passed away.
Zena was far more than a support dog—she was a beloved symbol of comfort and trust throughout Wilmington. Her scheduled visits to schools, senior centers, and community events became fondly anticipated by community members of all ages. Whether it was a child’s anxious moment or an adult in recovery seeking solace, Zena had a quiet, calming gift that words often couldn’t replicate.
Chief Brian Pupa of the Wilmington Police Department expressed the community’s heartbreak in a public statement:
“We are heartbroken today because Zena was a beloved member of our Wilmington Police family, and a beloved member of our community. For three years, Zena put residents and families at ease even during the toughest of times, and her work will not be forgotten. She served her community well.”
Recognized by name and face, and with her own popular Instagram account chronicling her public service and joyful moments, Zena achieved a level of connection rarely seen in canine officers. Her presence often eased tensions in difficult circumstances and played a pivotal role in building positive relationships between the police department and the public they serve.
The Tewksbury Police Department continues its investigation into the cause of the crash, and while details surrounding the driver involved are limited, the impact on the Wilmington community is loud and clear. Vigils, remembrance posts, and heartfelt messages have poured in from residents and local organizations alike, demonstrating the void Zena leaves behind.
Zena’s legacy goes beyond her job description. She was a bridge between law enforcement and community healing—an empathetic face for a profession often met with emotional hesitation. In just three years, she touched hundreds of lives and hearts in ways only a comfort dog could.
In remembrance, many have shared their personal stories of how Zena made a difference in their lives, from calming distressed students during school visits to easing elders’ anxieties in nursing homes. Her memory will continue to inspire not only the Wilmington Police Department but other communities that recognize the value of therapy and comfort animals within law enforcement.
