Hospitals can be daunting places for children, especially those dealing with serious medical conditions like heart disease. At Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville, a furry companion named Squid is proving that healing doesn’t always come from medicine.
Squid, a black Labrador and trained facility dog, has become a trusted source of emotional comfort for young patients. As part of the hospital’s Canine Clinicians Facility Dog Program, Squid’s job goes beyond wagging tails—he uplifts spirits, reduces anxiety, and helps children navigate the toughest moments of their health journeys.
One of the children most impacted by Squid is 10-year-old Niah Carver, a brave girl living with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect. From the moment she met Squid, an immediate bond formed. His gentle demeanor and playful spirit offered something no medical procedure could: peace of mind.
Niah’s hospital visits frequently involve stressful operations and long stays. But knowing Squid would be there waiting for her became a powerful motivator. Her mother, Chelsea Carver, noticed a profound shift in Niah’s emotional state whenever Squid was nearby. “She immediately is in a different headspace. It’s like someone changed the channel,” Chelsea shared.
Outside the hospital, Squid’s influence continues. Niah often carries a stuffed version of Squid to school for emotional support. On big days—like field day or a class presentation—her plush pal stays close. It’s a comforting reminder of the real-life Labrador who helped her through surgeries and tests.
The connection between Squid and Niah became so meaningful that the hospital coordinated a special visit to Niah’s school. Her classmates met the real Squid in person along with his handler, giving them a heartwarming glimpse into how facility dogs help children like Niah every day.
- Squid is trained through Canine Companions, dedicated to providing expertly trained service dogs to those in need.
- His services are completely free to families, ensuring all patients have access to his healing presence regardless of financial situation.
On days when Squid couldn’t be there in person, Niah’s father went the extra mile—he dressed up like the Labrador to keep her smiling. These actions underline how deeply Squid’s presence has become interwoven with the Carver family’s medical journey and emotional healing.
Squid’s work is about more than cuddles. He plays a therapeutic role, helping to instill courage in children during daunting treatments and giving parents a sense of empowerment. Chelsea expressed, “As a parent, it takes you out of the most helpless situation where you can’t help your kid who’s suffering and gives you something that you can do for them.”
For Niah, her words resonate with the simplicity only a child can deliver: “He makes me feel calm and kind of happy because he’s really cute.” It’s these moments of calm in the chaos of treatment that define Squid’s invaluable role.
The Carver family now sees Squid as much more than a hospital therapy dog. He represents hope, strength, and the loving bond between a child and her four-legged friend.
