Brave Rescue Effort Saves Kitten Stuck 50 Feet in Air
Less than an hour before sunset on a chilly January evening in 2025, the volunteers at Greenpoint Cats received an urgent message. A Good Samaritan named Jacob had spotted a stranded kitten on the dangerous ledge of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) in New York City, 50 feet above a bustling street.
A Desperate Situation on the BQE
The Greenpoint Cats team rushed to the scene and were shocked to see a young black-and-white kitten clinging to the edge of the highway, surrounded by danger. Traffic whizzed by on one side, while a deadly drop loomed on the other.
According to Greenpoint Cats, the kitten had been stuck for six hours, exposed to the fast-moving traffic and freezing temperatures. The team immediately reached out for help while a concerned crowd gathered below.
The Community Mobilizes for the Kitten’s Rescue
Word spread quickly, and animal lovers from all over the neighborhood arrived— some by foot, others by bike or car. Volunteers from Puppy Kitty NYC joined the effort, forming a protective net below in case the kitten slipped.
Realizing that attempting the rescue themselves would be too dangerous, Greenpoint Cats called for backup from the local police precinct. Soon, officers arrived to safely divert traffic and support the rescue operation.
A Heroic Police Rescue
Brooklyn police officer Hernandez, an NYPD officer and cat parent, devised a clever plan to save the kitten. He positioned a large dog carrier tipped on its side with the opening facing upwards. Then, with quick precision, he pushed the frightened kitten into the carrier, ensuring her safety.
The kitten, later named Perry, was finally safe. Though she was initially in shock, she relaxed within two hours of her rescue and even allowed belly rubs from her rescuers.
Perry’s Journey to Finding a Home
Once safe, Perry was taken in by Puppy Kitty NYC, where she would receive care and an opportunity to find a forever home. However, as her initial fear faded, Perry’s timid nature became apparent. She resisted human interaction, a common trait in kittens who grow up on the streets.
Gaining Perry’s Trust
Understanding Perry’s fear, volunteers at Puppy Kitty NYC worked patiently to help her feel comfortable. They enlisted the help of Alyssa from Adoptables NYC, who used gentle techniques like softly speaking to Perry, offering treats, and using a back scratcher to get her used to touch.
Slowly but surely, Perry’s confidence grew. She became more comfortable in her foster home and even began purring when petted. Her caretakers knew she was finally ready for adoption.
Perry’s Bright Future
Now, Perry is officially looking for her forever home. Her rescuers hope she will find a family with another young cat to play with, ensuring she continues to thrive.
The incredible rescue effort that saved Perry’s life highlights the power of community, teamwork, and compassion. Thanks to the Good Samaritan who spotted her, the dedicated volunteers, and the brave NYPD officer, Perry now has a second chance at life.
