A Life Saved on the Open Road
On a routine drive from Indiana to Chicago, Katie Zelenika had no idea her journey would take an unexpected turn. A few months ago, she spotted an orange cat stranded on the median of a busy highway — in immediate danger, with cars whizzing by on both sides. The small feline was about to step directly into traffic when Zelenika acted on instinct.
“I was like, ‘There’s no way he’s going to be able to get across or make it, and no one else is probably going to stop,’” Zelenika told The Dodo.
Rescue Mission on the Highway
Zelenika immediately made a quick U-turn, determined to save the helpless cat despite busy traffic and time constraints. It took her 10 agonizing minutes to get back to the spot where she had first seen him. She braced herself for the worst, hoping the little cat had survived.
“When I drove up, he was laying on [what] looked like a sewer, and so I wasn’t sure if he was still alive,” she recalled.
Fortunately, the cat was still alive — just completely exhausted, traumatized, and too weak to move. Zelenika approached him carefully, worried he might panic and run into traffic. After spending 20 to 30 minutes trying to gain his trust, she was finally able to wrap him in a sweatshirt and bring him safely into her car.
A Safe Haven and a New Name
Zelenika immediately reached out to the Michiana Humane Society. The organization offered to sponsor the medical care and support for the cat while she fostered him. She gave the feline a cheerful new name — Sunny — in celebration of the bright future she hoped for him.
A vet examination revealed important and heartbreaking details. Sunny had no microchip and, disturbingly, had been declawed. His time exposed to the sweltering August heat had left him with serious injuries, especially to his feet.
“All of his paw pads were burnt off from walking,” Zelenika said.
Sunny’s Road to Recovery
Initially, Sunny was visibly scared and withdrawn. He was adapting to an entirely new environment after what had clearly been a terrifying ordeal. But with love, patience, and gentle care, his playful personality began to emerge.
“He slowly really opened up and was being a lot more playful,” Zelenika said, smiling. “He just always wanted belly rubs or would do air biscuits.”
Happy Endings and New Beginnings
Just two months after his dramatic rescue, Sunny found his forever home through the Michiana Humane Society. Saying goodbye was bittersweet for Zelenika, who had formed a deep bond with the cat. She had watched him grow from a frightened and injured stray into a confident and cuddly companion.
Thanks to Zelenika’s quick thinking and compassionate heart, Sunny now enjoys a safe, joyful life far from the dangers of a highway.
Sunny’s heartwarming journey from a highway median to a loving home is a testament to the impact one person can make. His story reminds us to look twice — and care deeply — because you never know when a life might need saving.
