In a miraculous turn of events, a small orange cat named Garfield survived an encounter that many might have deemed impossible. Found lying still along a stretch of train tracks in Lindenhurst station on Long Island, this feline’s story is one of resilience and unexpected companionship.
Initially unnoticed among the busy tracks, Garfield’s small frame was almost invisible as life continued to bustle past him. It wasn’t until a locomotive engineer happened to spot him that his story began to change. The engineer, at first, assumed the worst, and the train continued its course. However, in an astonishing twist, nearly 24 hours later, the persistent cat caught the same engineer’s eye by moving—a simple action that symbolized hope and the will to survive.
With urgency, cat rescuer John DeBacker was called to assist, bringing along the MTA Police Department. Their approach was cautious; every move counted as they slowly gained Garfield’s trust. Despite what must have been a terrifying ordeal, the cat did not resist his rescuers. He lay quietly, his demeanor gentle yet struggling to conceal the hardships he had faced. His actions revealed a deep, unwavering trust that belied his experience.
Once safely nestled in a crate, a closer inspection revealed visible injuries, including a wound on his face. Yet, what remained unseen was his surprisingly affectionate nature. “He didn’t try to bite me at all. He was extremely affectionate once I picked him up,” said DeBacker. Garfield leaned into human touch, despite his ordeal, showcasing an inherent strength and gentle spirit.
Adopted by South Shore Feral Care in West Babylon, Garfield received much-needed care to nurse his visible and hidden wounds. A comprehensive veterinary assessment was planned to ensure his full recovery. His injuries were extensive yet surprisingly non-lethal, attesting to his incredible luck and resilience. “Garfield has a complete fracture of a front limb, a broken nose, and two fractured hips. His injuries are extensive, but with youth on his side, his chances of healing well are good,” the rescuers noted.
Garfield’s story is one that underscores a simple yet profound truth: the strength of choosing trust over fear.
