A New Family Member in Rockville, Maryland

Last summer, Derek Thomas and his family from Rockville, Maryland, welcomed an adorable new member into their household—a tabby cat named Lucy. Since then, Lucy has completely captivated Derek, his wife Colleen, and their children with her personality and playful energy.

“She is a very sweet, active, playful and talkative cat,” Derek shared in an interview with The Dodo.

Lucy’s Love for the Great Outdoors—From the Window

After a few months with her new family, Lucy’s favorite hobby quickly became clear. She absolutely loves perching by the front window, keeping an eye out for neighborhood happenings. Birds, squirrels, and passing cats often catch her attention as she reacts with an endearing chirping sound—her version of excited commentary.

One morning, Lucy’s distinctive chirp signaled the start of an incredible encounter.

An Unexpected Visitor: A Deer!

“They noticed that Lucy was taking an interest in whatever was going on outside of our front window,” Derek recalled. “She had jumped up on top of our piano and was pulling back the blinds.”

When Colleen peeked outside, she discovered something magical—a deer was curled up peacefully right outside their home.

Without Lucy’s alert, the family might have completely missed the forest guest resting just feet away.

A Curious Exchange Between Cat and Deer

Clearly entranced, Lucy gazed at the quiet deer, eager to get a better look. She pushed at the blinds, climbed up the window, and stretched her body as high as she could—all in hopes of forming a connection with the elegant animal outside.

“I thought it was very funny,” Derek added. “Lucy was doing everything she could to touch noses.”

Even more surprisingly, the deer didn’t flinch or run. Instead, it walked right up to the window, meeting Lucy eye to eye. For a brief moment, these two very different creatures locked into a moment of mutual curiosity and silent friendship.

“The deer had no problem looking inside of our house and meeting eyes with Lucy or one of the humans inside,” said Derek. “The deer seemed curious, but not threatened by Lucy.”

A Friendship That May Return

Eventually, the deer wandered off, but Lucy remained alert at the window, perhaps patiently waiting for her new friend to return. That same evening, her wish came true—the deer came back to the same spot, and Lucy instantly responded with her characteristic chirp.

“Lucy showed as much excitement when the deer returned,” Derek said. It was clear that Lucy recognized the animal and wanted nothing more than to continue their touching exchange.

Feline Curiosity Meets Nature

While cats are naturally curious creatures, Lucy’s connection with this gentle deer serves as a heartwarming example of how animals—wild or domesticated—can find companionship in the most unexpected places. As she continues watching from her favorite window perch, Lucy (and her family) are holding out hope for more visits from her hoofed friend.
