Actor Christopher Meloni, known for his fierce onscreen performances, recently revealed a tender and deeply emotional side in an Instagram tribute to his beloved rescue dog, Scotty, who passed away at the age of 14.
In a heartfelt post, Meloni shared the story of Scotty’s adoption and the profound connection that blossomed over the years. “He began as a rescue pup from Kentucky,” he wrote, reflecting on the day that he, his wife Doris Sherman Williams, and their children, Sophia and Dante, welcomed Scotty into their family. Initially wanting to name him Biscotti, Meloni affectionately noted, “The kids named him Scotty…I wanted Biscotti…the kids won.”
Scotty was no ordinary pet; he became an irreplaceable part of the Meloni family. As the years passed, Meloni shared that Scotty developed a distinct and vibrant personality that quickly earned him a series of affectionate nicknames, including the charming “Little Mister,“ lovingly pronounced as “Lidder Midder.” In his final months, the actor found himself softly calling him “Puppy”—a tender gesture that hinted at his desire to cling to their cherished bond just a little longer.
According to Meloni, Scotty had recently been diagnosed with cancer and was given only a month to live. But in a final act of love and resilience, Scotty gave the family three additional precious months together. Meloni captioned, “He was a giver. Fourteen years was a good run. In the words of Jon Stewart, ‘In a world of good boys, Scotty was the best.’”
Accompanying the post were a series of touching images showcasing Scotty’s life with his family—trailing behind Sophia and Dante on walks, lounging at home, and posing in selfies with Meloni. These moments convey a story of mutual love and the everyday joys that made Scotty an integral part of Meloni’s life.
Meloni’s Law & Order: SVU co-star and longtime friend Mariska Hargitay commented on the post, sending her condolences with the words, “Sending you love my friend. Rest in peace sweet Scotty ✨.”
In previous interviews, the actor had often spoken of Scotty’s impact on his life. In one conversation with People magazine, Meloni described how adopting Scotty forever changed his home dynamic: “You get an interaction with another living being… it touches this heart from a different place.”
Always one to find humor in everyday life, Meloni used to joke about Scotty’s unique looks, saying, “He looked like a bassist from a ’70s hair metal band. I swear he wears black eyeliner. I’ve never caught him putting on makeup, but if I sent you a picture, you’d go, ‘Oh my, he’s wearing makeup.’”
Despite the fun-loving quips, it’s evident that Meloni shared a deep, meaningful bond with Scotty. The actor called his dog “independent,” affectionate on his own terms, yet deeply grateful for life’s simple pleasures—walks, meals, and quiet companionship.
“That’s when you’re best friends,” Meloni once said, reflecting on the closeness they shared.
Meloni concluded his tribute with these poignant words: “It is never easy… Godspeed Lidder Midder.”
For pet lovers everywhere who have endured the heartache of losing a loyal companion, Meloni’s loss is a reminder of the unwavering bond between humans and dogs. Scotty may no longer be at his side, but his presence lives on in the home, hearts, and memories he left behind.
