College Student Discovers 8 Kittens Abandoned in Sealed Boxes
A Shocking Discovery on the Roadside
While driving home from Alfred State College in Alfred, New York, one college student experienced something she’d never forget. As she approached a highway ramp, she noticed several boxes abandoned on the roadside. Curiosity got the better of her, and she pulled over to inspect them.
As she approached, what she saw sent chills down her spine — tiny paws were reaching out through slits in the sealed boxes.
A Heartbreaking Scene
Inside the boxes, she found eight cats and kittens crammed together with no way out. The boxes had been duct-taped shut, leaving the animals in complete darkness. Concerned for their safety, she loaded the boxes into her car and headed straight to the Alfred State Campus Police headquarters.
Police officers, equally shocked by the discovery, immediately contacted SPCA Serving Allegany County, which swiftly coordinated the kittens’ transfer to their shelter for emergency care.
A Shelter’s Response: Rescue and Recovery
Lynda Pruski and Lucas Thomas of the SPCA shared their initial reaction:
“We just shook our heads in disbelief,” they said. “How could someone put them in boxes, duct tape them shut, and leave them by the road like that? You can’t help but wonder, ‘How did these poor cats and kittens feel sitting in darkness, unable to get out?’”
Upon arrival, the SPCA team set out to examine and treat the cats. Several of the kittens were diagnosed with upper respiratory infections and eye issues, no doubt worsened by their traumatic experience.
A Brighter Future: Healing and Hope
Despite their ordeal, the cats quickly adjusted to their safe new surroundings. “They were very relieved to be out of the boxes,” said Pruski and Thomas. It was clear the cats sensed they were now in caring hands.
To give them a fresh start, the staff even gave each cat a name:
- Mew
- Nilla
- Joker
- Chapel
- Sebastian
- Huey
- Dewey
- Louie
Encouraging Responsible Rehoming
This heartwarming rescue highlights a critical issue facing many communities: the proper way to surrender or rehome pets. The SPCA hopes that the story of these eight kittens encourages others to take more responsible steps when surrendering animals.
“Many times people are ashamed or hesitant about reaching out for help,” Pruski and Thomas said. “The first step should be calling your local shelter or rescue. If they’re at full capacity, try another shelter. There is always an option better than abandonment.”
A New Beginning
Thankfully, the kittens found in those taped boxes survived their frightening ordeal and are now on the path to being adopted into loving, forever homes. Their story is an inspiring reminder of the difference one compassionate person can make.
“All these cats and kitties have a bright future ahead of them!” said the SPCA team proudly.
