Couple Seeks Kitten but Finds Their Perfect Match in a Shy Shelter Cat Who Waited Months

A few months ago, a stray cat was seen wandering alone through a neighborhood, appearing in yards and at doorsteps in search of food. Neighbors attempted to help, but she would flee when approached, only to return shortly after. They began feeding her and constructed a shelter when they couldn’t catch her, also inquiring if anyone was missing a cat.

As temperatures dropped and no one claimed the cat, they contacted Exploits Valley SPCA to find her a home before the weather worsened. With the neighbors’ assistance, the cat was safely brought in from the streets.

At the SPCA, she was estimated to be 3-4 years old and was covered in fleas. Initially, she was so frightened that staff couldn’t touch her; she tried to hide, even ducking her head into the litter box. With proper care and nutritious food, she gradually warmed up, seeking affection and purring during belly rubs. It became clear she was once a tame, owned cat.

Named “Honey” by her rescuers, she was ready to find a loving home. Despite her eagerness for love, Honey remained quietly in a corner, too shy to approach visitors and often overlooked in favor of more outgoing cats. Staff hoped to find someone special to connect with her, noting, “Once she likes you, she loves you.”

Recently, a couple visited the SPCA seeking a kitten. After their 13-year-old cat passed suddenly, they felt compelled to welcome another “loaf of love.” Unable to find a kitten, they noticed Honey’s head poking out from a cat tree and realized she shared the same name as their late Great Dane. They left the shelter but couldn’t stop thinking about her.

A few days later, they returned to spend time with Honey. Though fearful, she allowed petting and began purring immediately, something she didn’t do for everyone. Honey drooled from happiness, as if she’d found the person she’d been waiting for. Seeing her trust, they knew she was the one.

When they decided to adopt Honey, the shelter staff were thrilled. She was among the 12 cats who had waited the longest and was the shyest, now becoming the first to find her forever home.

After about a week in her new home, Honey, now named Peaches, is adjusting beautifully. She loves to cuddle, still hides occasionally, but is receptive to affection when approached. She’s eating well, using her litter box, and exploring all the nooks and crannies in the house, even perching atop the hot water tank.

Peaches will never know abandonment again and will be loved for the rest of her life.
