Devoted Cat’s Heartfelt Farewell to Ailing Owner Moves Hearts
Earlier this year, Justine Leo, after completing his shift at a mall in the Philippines, encountered a small kitten seemingly abandoned at the mall’s entrance. The kitten, visibly distressed and hungry, immediately captured Leo’s attention.
“She was crying and looked hungry,” Leo shared with The Dodo. “I felt pity for her, so I took her home.”
Justine Leo, along with his siblings, had a history of rescuing cats and already had a few at home. Their mother, initially resistant to the idea, soon warmed up to the feline additions.
Among these rescues was Meymey, the little cat that would grow incredibly significant in their lives. A few months after Meymey joined their family, Leo’s mother fell ill and became bedridden. While the family was preoccupied with work, Meymey stayed close, ensuring Leo’s mother was never alone.
Unwavering Companion
“She always comforted my mom after she became bedridden,” Leo recounted. “She was always by her side. My mother really loved it.”
Tragically, Leo’s mother succumbed to her illness, but the special bond she shared with Meymey continued to linger. At her wake, held in a local chapel, Meymey’s actions startled and moved the family.
A Farewell of Love
“She walked under my mother’s coffin. Then she jumped on top,” Leo said. “I made her get down, but she kept jumping up. I got emotional when I saw it, and decided to let her be.”
Meymey’s actions seemed a poignant goodbye, conveying her affection and loyalty with pure sincerity. To the family, it was a clear expression of the deep connection Meymey and their mother shared.
“I think Meymey understood the situation with my mom,” Leo observed. “She was always by my mother’s side, and that’s where she wanted to be one last time. It was touching to see how much Meymey loved her.”
Meymey’s Comforting Presence
Though Leo and his family continue to grieve their loss, the comfort Meymey provided has extended beyond their late mother. Meymey continues to offer solace to the family, her presence a gentle reminder of love and companionship.
“Sometimes, when I get home from work, Meymey walks up and comforts me,” Leo said.
Rescued from abandonment, Meymey did more than find a home — she transformed a household, providing unyielding comfort through love, loss, and healing.
