Discovery of Abandoned Newborn Kittens in Narrow Alleyway

Last year, the residents of Brooklyn, New York, found themselves involved in an unexpected rescue mission. A local stray cat had given birth to a litter of kittens, leaving them nestled within a small gap between two homes. Concerned for their safety, the residents reached out to Heidi Systo of Heidi Wrangles Cats, a seasoned feline rescuer.

Systo arrived promptly, carefully approaching the site so as not to frighten any of the kittens. Despite her best efforts, the mama cat became anxious and fled the scene. “Our meddling made her leave her kittens and keep her distance,” Systo shared on Instagram.

With the kittens now left to fend for themselves, Systo was immediately concerned about their welfare. Residents who had been feeding the mother cat mentioned that she had previously moved her kittens out of sight during a rainy day, making them impossible to trap. With rain in the forecast the following day, Systo was apprehensive about a similar occurrence.

The narrow gap where kittens were found

Faced with a tough decision, Systo opted to bring the kittens inside temporarily, with the intention of safely trapping the mother cat afterward. “Kitten bait is always my plan B and never my first choice,” Systo noted, highlighting the importance of keeping feline families together whenever possible.

Using tongs and a scooping tool, Systo carefully collected the kittens and placed them in a lined carrier. Once inside, she dedicated herself to providing the round-the-clock care necessary for their survival, focusing on warmth and nutrition. “I don’t recommend taking or moving kittens this age unless doing so at the guidance of a rescue who’s able to handle every possible outcome,” Systo advised.

When the kittens were stabilized, Systo turned her attention to the next phase of her plan — reuniting them with their mother. She placed the kittens in a carrier outside and set a trap nearby to lure the mama cat.

Through trial and error, Systo and her team successfully trapped the mother cat and reunited her with her kittens. The relief was palpable among everyone involved, as they weren’t certain they would be able to capture her. Now, the little family was complete once more, and the mama, affectionately nicknamed Debbie Downer by Systo, quickly resumed her maternal duties.

In time, each of the kittens was weaned, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Before long, they all found their forever homes through adoption. Systo and the team at Heidi Wrangles Cats felt deeply gratified in not only saving the feline family but also securing a brighter future for each member.
