In a remote part of Oklahoma, a young pup named Oakley lingered near an intersection, perhaps searching for a kind motorist to spot him.
The puppy had been deserted alongside two other dogs. The abandoned pets wandered the area for over a week, yearning for their family to return. During nights, they sought shelter in a metal culvert beneath the roadway. A compassionate passerby noticed the black Lab mix and his fellow strays, promptly alerting animal rescuer Alysse Matlock, who rushed to the scene. Her heart sank when she assessed the puppy’s condition.
“His state was quite dire, which devastated me,” Matlock recalled.
Oakley was the first to be rescued among the trio. His companions were later located and placed in foster care for rehabilitation.
Back at her residence, Matlock witnessed Oakley’s transformation unfold quickly. His endearing personality emerged swiftly. While touched by his immediate show of affection, Matlock felt outraged at his abandonment.
“He’s an incredibly gentle, intelligent companion who craves human attention,” Matlock explained. “It infuriated me that someone could be so heartless.”
After giving Oakley a thorough bath, Matlock arranged for his veterinary treatment. She reached out to Safe Haven Animal Rescue, who graciously covered his medical expenses while she provided foster care.
Within a few months, Oakley’s skin issues and eye problems showed remarkable improvement. Though he was thoroughly enjoying his foster home, especially mealtimes, he was ready for a permanent family.
Matlock had no doubts about Oakley’s adoptability.
“He was incredibly adaptable,” she shared. “[He] formed bonds with everyone he met from day one!”
A particular family, who discovered Oakley through Matlock’s Instagram video, was deeply touched by his resilient spirit. They knew they had to meet him. After contacting Matlock and arranging a visit, they immediately recognized he was their perfect match.
“They made the journey from Minnesota specifically for him,” Matlock revealed. “He’s been seamlessly integrated into their family since.”
