Dog Keeps Squeezing Into Tight Spaces for the Sweetest Reason
Meet Bagels: The 34-Pound Pup with a Passion for Small Spaces
Most dogs love sprawling out on big, fluffy beds. But not Bagels. This 34-pound keeshond has a unique habit that sets her apart — she prefers snuggling up in the smallest containers she can find. From laundry baskets to carry-on suitcases, no cozy, compact space is safe from Bagels’ adorable nesting behavior.
“The smallest space Bagels has tried to fit into was probably a small carry-on-sized suitcase,” said her owner, Daniel Hwang, in an interview with The Dodo. “I unloaded some clothes to put in a closet, and when I came back, she was curled up like a little croissant in the suitcase.”
A Pandemic Puppy Bonded for Life
Bagels joined Hwang’s life during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Like many who adopted pets during that time, Hwang spent lots of quality time with his pandemic puppy, resulting in one tightly bonded pair. That bond may be the reason Bagels is so drawn to enclosed spaces that smell like her human dad.
“She’s extremely friendly and clingy,” Hwang explained. “She’s a keeshond, and they’re nicknamed ‘Velcro dogs’ because of how closely they stick to their owners. I’d say that’s a pretty accurate description.”
Adjusting to a New Home Dynamic
While Bagels once had Hwang all to herself, things changed after his girlfriend — a cat lover — moved in. Soon, they adopted two cats named Celsius and Oyster, which could’ve caused trouble given their shared love for tiny hiding spots.
“Bagels was so worried about the strange new creatures in the house, she barked for almost two days straight,” said Hwang.
But after a slow and careful introduction through a pet gate, something unexpected happened.
“Bagels walked over to them, sniffed them… then walked away completely uninterested,” said Hwang. Thankfully, no turf wars over baskets ensued.
Role Reversal: When the Cats Take Over the Dog Bed
Interestingly, while Bagels prefers the suitcase or laundry basket life, the cats seem to have laid claim to the spacious dog bed.
“In the morning, it’s common to see the cat on the dog bed and the dog on the human bed,” Hwang said. Despite the mix-up, everyone in the house seems happy with the unspoken arrangement.
Life Within 3 Feet
Whether it’s the foot of the bed at night, or a basket in the laundry room during the day, one thing’s certain — Bagels is never far from her human.
“Wherever I am, Bagels is always within about three feet,” said Hwang. Her strange affinity for tight spaces is just one more way she stays close to the people she loves the most.
A Picture-Perfect Velcro Dog
This charming pup might not conform to traditional dog behavior, but that’s exactly what makes Bagels so special. Her loyalty, affectionate nature, and basket-hopping antics have only deepened her bond with her family — both human and feline.
