Dog Rescued from Storm Drain After Frightening Ordeal

A peaceful walk turned into a terrifying ordeal for a New Jersey dog named Sandy when she slipped out of her collar and fell into a storm drain. On October 10, the Wall Township Police Department sprang into action after Sandy’s owner frantically called for help as her beloved pet disappeared underground.

Sandy had managed to wriggle loose during their routine stroll and tumbled into a storm sewer, trapped and frightened beneath the street surface. Her cries for help echoed up through the drain, prompting immediate concern from bystanders and authorities alike.

Responding to the emergency were officers Ptl. Jerry Baker, Ptl. Dan Grothues, Ptl. Josh Wheeler, and Lt. Eric Jennings. Assessing the situation quickly and realizing the seriousness of Sandy’s entrapment, the team determined that waiting for public works to remove the heavy iron grate wasn’t an option. Time was of the essence.

The officers then improvised. The police officers retrieved a lockout tool — typically used to open locked car doors — and used it to reach down into the dark storm drain below. They skillfully hooked Sandy’s collar, working cautiously to guide her back up through the narrow opening.

The atmosphere was tense. Above ground, Sandy’s cries grew more urgent, and every movement had to be precise. One slip could have made the situation worse. But thanks to the officers’ calm demeanor and teamwork, they steadily lifted Sandy up from the darkness below.

One officer gently asked, “She won’t run, right?” as he ensured Sandy was securely held. Sandy clung close to her owner, who embraced her with relief and gratitude. Thanks to the officers’ quick intervention and creative thinking, Sandy was reunited unharmed with her family.

The Wall Township Police Department praised the bravery of its officers in a statement, emphasizing how the team’s decisions — made on the spot under pressure — directly led to a happy ending.

The incident highlights several important reminders for pet owners and emergency responders alike:

  • Always check that collars are secure and fitted correctly before walks, especially for excitable or nervous dogs.
  • Storm drains can be treacherous for animals — even small openings can pose a serious risk of entrapment.
  • Emergency responders play a vital role beyond human emergencies, extending their compassion and expertise to help animals in danger.

The heart-stopping moment was captured on video and has since been widely praised for showing empathy and human-animal connection in action. Sandy’s rescue is a testament to teamwork, fast thinking, and the dedication of officers who go above and beyond — even when the call comes from below ground.
