Dog Walker Saves Crated Puppy Family Thrown From Moving Van
In a shocking instance of animal abandonment, a woman in Cheshire, England, witnessed an appalling act of cruelty while taking her dog for a morning walk. As she strolled through a quiet alleyway, a van came skidding to a sudden halt. She watched with disbelief as someone inside the van tossed a dog crate into nearby bushes and quickly sped away. Acting instinctively, she rushed to the crate and was stunned by what she found inside.
The crate, thrown unceremoniously into the underbrush, held a terrified feline family – five black cats in total, including two very young kittens. The woman immediately retrieved the crate from the cold bush-covered area and took them to the safety of her home. She then contacted the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), who were both horrified and sympathetic about the ordeal the cats had survived.
Abandoned and Afraid: A Mother’s Struggle for Her Kittens
According to RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Caren Goodman, “To throw cats, including kittens that are so young, out into the cold at this time of year is a horrific thing to do.” The abandoned cats were swiftly collected from the good Samaritan’s home and transported to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for prompt medical evaluation.
While two of the adult cats were found to be in relatively good health, the mother cat and her two kittens required ongoing medical care. The kittens were suffering from conjunctivitis and are under treatment, while their mother is being monitored for her low weight and overall condition.
Not Ferals, But Loved Pets Abandoned
Inspector Goodman emphasized that the cats were clearly domesticated. “These are very domesticated cats, they are not feral,” she said. “They were taken in this van, it appears, with the intention of abandoning them.”
The RSPCA believes that all five cats are female and suspects they were purposefully dumped. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. According to the charity, black cats are significantly more likely to be abandoned or overlooked for adoption than other cats. In fact, black cats are three times more likely to end up in shelters than cats of other colors.
Just last month, around 700 black cats were reported to be waiting for loving homes across RSPCA shelters in the UK—and now, with this latest case, five more have been added to the growing number.

Thankfully, the quick actions of the dog walker likely saved the cats from a much worse fate. Her caring instincts ensured the frightened felines were brought to safety before they could come to harm. Thanks to her compassionate response, the cats are now beginning a path to recovery.
Though the ordeal was traumatic, the cats are currently safe under the care of the RSPCA, and efforts will soon begin to find them loving forever homes.
