Life in the wild can sometimes present unexpected dangers, even for Australia’s most iconic wildlife. Recently, a dramatic and heartwarming event unfolded along a rural roadside when concerned travelers spotted a kangaroo hopelessly entangled in a barbed wire fence. The sight was haunting—the animal, exhausted and frightened, was suspended by its foot, unable to move or escape the painful trap on its own.
The good Samaritans, identified only as a group of friends returning from Eyre Peninsula, were initially unsure if the kangaroo was even alive. From a distance, it appeared lifeless—possibly another tragic casualty of fencing incidents that occur too often in Australia’s open bushlands. But as they slowly got closer, the rescuers realized the animal’s chest was subtly rising and falling—he was alive.
“He must’ve been there for quite a while,” one of the rescuers recalled. “He looked really stressed and dehydrated.”
The kangaroo’s foot had become deeply wrapped in the barbed wire, cutting into the skin and making any struggle to escape only more damaging. The scene was tense—the animal was panicked, and the rescuers were unsure how it might react. However, despite its fear, they began working gently and calmly, doing everything they could to ease its suffering.
The rescuers decided to transport the kangaroo into the back of their truck to help relieve weight on the injured foot. To keep him calm, they gently draped a towel over his face—a method often used to calm frightened wildlife. Once the distressed animal was settled, another passerby stopped to offer assistance, bringing another pair of hands to the delicate situation.
Together, the three rescuers managed to carefully unwind the barbed wire from the kangaroo’s foot—an effort requiring patience, care, and teamwork. Though initially frozen in fear, the kangaroo seemed to understand that he was being helped. Moments later, he was free, though clearly dazed from the ordeal.
Once liberated, the kangaroo was offered water, which he accepted gratefully—a clear sign of his dehydration and discomfort. His response was timid but trusting as he drank and laid in the truck bed, clearly exhausted from the trauma.
This incredible rescue was captured on video and uploaded by one of the rescuers to TikTok, where it has gained widespread support from animal lovers across the globe. You can watch the full rescue here:
@tab_ventures Driving home from Eyre Peninsula, i turned around to see what happened to a dead Kangaroo I saw hanging off a fence. We didn’t realise until we got closer that he was still alive.. he must’ve been stuck there for some time. He was pretty distressed and thirsty. We left still pretty dazed.. hoping he recovers ❤

Incidents like this remind us of the dangers that human-made structures pose to wildlife. Barbed wire fences, while common in rural areas, can become near-deadly traps for animals like kangaroos, wallabies, and even large birds.
Key takeaways from this rescue:
- Observant individuals can make life-saving differences for wildlife simply by stopping to look closer.
- Working calmly and gently around wild animals reduces additional stress and can prevent injury to both the animal and the rescuer.
- Even small actions, like offering water or covering an animal’s face with a towel, can help ease their trauma during a rescue.
- Teamwork and compassion made this rescue possible, transforming a tragic scene into one of hope and survival.
Though shaken, the kangaroo survived its encounter with the barbed wire thanks to the compassion of strangers who chose to act. This moment of kindness serves as a powerful reminder of the impact people can have when they show empathy toward the vulnerable—especially those without a voice.
