A devastating fire nearly destroyed the Ritchie County Humane Society, leaving behind significant damage and heartbreaking losses. However, with the help of over 20 volunteers from GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Rebuild, hope was restored. The shelter not only received the necessary repairs but was also improved to provide even better conditions for its animals.
A Community United for a Worthy Cause
When the fire struck, it didn’t just damage the facility—it also took the lives of some of their beloved animals. For the shelter staff and volunteers, the emotional toll was immense. However, rather than letting tragedy define them, they turned to rebuilding. That’s when Rescue Rebuild stepped in.
Volunteers arrived ready to repair and enhance the facility, bringing much-needed support to the grieving shelter staff. Their goal was not only to fix what was lost but also to improve the shelter’s overall design and functionality, ensuring a better environment for the animals.
Regrading and Refining the Property
The fire had left the property uneven and damaged. As a first step, the Rescue Rebuild team worked on leveling the land. By reshaping the terrain and adjusting drainage patterns, they ensured the foundation was stable before further renovations began.
Brand New Kennels for the Dogs
One of the biggest improvements was the addition of six newly constructed 10×10 kennels built on a solid concrete pad. Pouring and setting the concrete required precision and speed, as concrete hardens quickly. Once the foundation was in place, the team assembled and installed the kennels to give the shelter’s dogs safe and comfortable housing.
Repairing the Surviving Kennels
Not everything in the shelter was destroyed by the fire, but the existing kennels required urgent attention. Volunteers reinforced the chain link fencing, repairing any holes or damaged areas to ensure the safety and security of the resident animals. This step was essential in preventing escapes or injuries.
Providing Comfort with Beds
The volunteers went beyond basic repairs by building cozy beds for the dogs in the kennels. Elevated dog beds help keep pets off the cold ground, offering them a more comfortable resting space. The addition of these beds significantly improved the well-being of the shelter’s animals.
A New Chapter for the Ritchie County Humane Society
Thanks to the efforts of Rescue Rebuild and dedicated volunteers, the shelter now has stronger and safer facilities. The transformation not only benefits the animals living there but has also lifted the spirits of the hardworking staff.
Through determination, teamwork, and a shared love for animals, a once-devastated shelter is now an improved and welcoming home for pets in need.
