Freezing Stray Cat Leaps Into Mail Truck Seeking Warmth
For the past four years, Amir, a dedicated postal worker from Minnesota, has become a beloved figure — not just among the community’s residents, but also its furry strays. Over time, Amir has developed a close bond with the stray and feral cats along his route, providing them with daily meals and insulated shelters to keep them safe during harsh winters.
“As soon as they see me, they’ll run up to me,” Amir shared with The Dodo, reflecting on the trust he’s built with the neighborhood cats. Known affectionately amongst locals as the ‘cat mailman,’ Amir never expected one feline encounter to change his routine in such an unexpected way.
An Extraordinary Encounter in the Snow
On a frigid December day, while navigating his usual mail route, Amir noticed a cat that seemed especially eager for his attention.
“She came up to me just screaming,” Amir recalled. “Then she was just following me up the street as I was delivering mail.”
The small cat, soaked from the snow and visibly shivering, tugged at Amir’s heart. Without hesitation, he scooped her into his arms. Instantly, she seemed to find comfort, relaxing right into his grasp, even as Amir managed to keep delivering mail with his free hand.
A Temporary Mail Truck Refuge
Assuming the cat belonged to someone in the neighborhood, Amir began knocking on doors nearby — but no one recognized her. With no other options and temperatures dropping, he brought her into the cab of his mail truck.
“She was pretty much hanging out with me half that day in my mail truck,” Amir said. “She just went to sleep.”
Later that day, Amir’s wife came during her lunch break to take the cat home, where the couple provided her with food, a warm bath, and a cozy spot to unwind. It didn’t take long before she began to recover from the cold and stress.
Finding Her Forever Home
Despite Amir’s efforts to locate the cat’s family by posting on neighborhood forums and lost pet websites, no owner came forward. Believing that fate brought her to him, Amir turned to family to help the cat find her forever home.
As it turned out, Amir’s brother had been considering adopting a cat. When Amir introduced him to the little feline, he agreed immediately to welcome her into his home — and gave her the name Sushi.
Sushi now lives happily with her new dad and her dog sibling, Pepper. Though it took a few days for the energetic pair to warm up to each other, they quickly became best friends.
