Fuzzy Kitten Rescued from Highway Overpass in Daring Life-Saving Mission
Down the hustle and bustle of Southern State Parkway in Long Island, New York, an unexpected scene unfolded as a fuzzy kitten found herself trembling on an overpass dangerously close to the road. This was not an ordinary day for drivers passing by, one of whom posted about the perilous situation in a local community Facebook group. It didn’t take long for the news to reach local hero, John Debacker.
Swift Action by a Local Rescuer
John Debacker, renowned for rescuing hundreds of cats in the area, was quick to spring into action. As he arrived at the scene, he knew that this would not be a straightforward rescue mission.
“It was extremely scary, one of my scariest rescues, actually,” Debacker shared with The Dodo. “The kitten could have jumped onto the parkway below, or ran onto the road I was on.”
A Rescue Mission Fraught with Danger
With the assistance of the Suffolk County Police Department, which expertly managed traffic control, Debacker executed a precarious plan. “One wrong move would have meant the difference between life and death,” he recounted in a Facebook post.
Showing incredible bravery, Debacker scaled a hardened pile of snow, his sole mission to reach the distressed kitten. With a towel in hand, he slowly advanced, grabbing the frightened 11-week-old kitten from the wire fence and securing her safely in his arms.
A Safe Haven for the Rescued Kitten
Initially, the kitten put up a resistance, seemingly unaware that she was in safe hands. However, not long after, she relaxed, and much to Debacker’s relief, started purring.
“[She] started purring almost instantly,” Debacker noted, feeling an overwhelming rush of adrenaline. The joy of knowing she was out of harm’s way was unparalleled.
He transported the kitten to All About Cats Rescue, where she received a thorough check-up and was provided with necessary nourishment and care. The kitten, affectionately named Bridgette by the rescue team, is now on the lookout for her forever family.
