An Unlikely Discovery in the Desert
While walking across a dusty, arid field on her way to Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, a teenage girl noticed something peculiar. Amid the dry landscape, a taped-up Amazon box sat abandoned in the dirt. Initial curiosity quickly evolved into concern.
According to a post by the Buckeye Animal Rescue & Kennel (BARK) on Facebook, “She thought it was strange. Upon closer inspection, she realized that there was a kitty inside.” What initially seemed like discarded packaging turned out to be a desperate cry for help from an abandoned animal.
A Quick Response to a Life in Need
Realizing the urgency of the situation, the teen did not hesitate. She picked up the box, carried it home, and immediately alerted her parents. Understanding this was no ordinary find, the family reached out to BARK for expert assistance.
Lilia Mutka, founder of Buckeye Animal Rescue & Kennel, responded to the call. With over 13 years of animal rescue experience, Mutka arrived prepared to help the helpless feline found in the field.
Betty Davis: A Feline with a Hidden History
Back at BARK’s home base, Mutka provided the cat with a warm bed and essential care. A veterinary appointment was scheduled to ensure the animal received proper vaccinations and tests. During the visit, a major breakthrough occurred—the cat had a microchip.
After scanning the chip, the rescue team found out the cat’s name was Betty Davis, and she had once been adopted through Pammy’s Second Chance Rescue, a local animal advocacy group. But how she ended up alone in a sealed box in the desert remained a mystery.
Back Where She Belongs
Mutka promptly contacted Pammy’s Second Chance Rescue to inform them of Betty Davis’s miraculous recovery. A member of their team soon came to retrieve the cat and transport her back to their facility, where she would be safe and closely monitored.
According to rescue organizations, an internal investigation will be conducted to uncover how Betty Davis came to be abandoned under such dangerous conditions. Ensuring her future safety—and preventing incidents like this from reoccurring—is now a top priority.

Though the situation was dire, Betty Davis’s story is ultimately one of hope, made possible by the quick thinking and kindness of a high school student and a dedicated group of animal advocates. BARK expressed gratitude in a heartfelt message:
