Baebo the Cat Senses Something Unusual
A few years ago in New York City, a curious and unusually vocal cat named Baebo captured the attention of both his family and their neighbors. Baebo’s persistent meowing at the window puzzled his owner, Erin, who immediately sensed that something out of the ordinary was going on.
“It was just so loud, and we would have neighbors texting us, ‘What’s going on? Like, we hear a cat outside in your yard,’” Erin said in a video shared by The Dodo.
The Truth Behind the Meowing: Kittens in Need
Erin soon discovered that Baebo wasn’t randomly captivated by the view outside—he was actually trying to alert the family to a litter of feral kittens living in the yard. A neighborhood feral cat had recently given birth near Erin’s house, and while most of the kittens had been rescued by kind neighbors, two of the kittens remained behind—right where Baebo could see them.
Once Erin connected the dots, her family sprang into action. Her daughter, Zoë, a devoted animal lover, was especially concerned about the welfare of the kittens. “I was worried because it was at the end of fall, and soon snow would arrive, but thank goodness rescuers came in,” Zoë recounted.
Operation Kitten Rescue
Using food as bait, Erin and her neighbors were able to coax one of the kittens into their house. They affectionately named her Waffles. The second kitten, however, proved to be a bit more elusive with an unmistakable escape-artist personality.
After multiple attempts and setting up humane traps over several days, they finally managed to rescue the little tabby. Inspired by his cleverness, Erin’s family decided to name him Lupin, a nod to the iconic French character Arsène Lupin.
Waffles and Lupin Find Their Forever Homes
Over the next few months, Erin’s household became a safe haven for the rescued siblings. Eventually, one of their neighbors chose to adopt Waffles, giving her a loving forever home. Meanwhile, Lupin stayed on with Erin’s family.
During the holiday season, Erin surprised her children with the news that Lupin would officially become part of their family. The announcement was met with overwhelming joy. “They are totally my family,” Zoë declared. “I personally love them a lot, even more than I like chocolate.”
A Newfound Brotherhood
As Lupin adjusted to his new surroundings, his bond with Baebo began to blossom. From mutual curiosity to playful romping and cozy naps shared side by side, the two felines became inseparable companions.
Without Baebo’s loud and persistent alerts, the pair of kittens may never have been found in time. “It just seemed so sweet because it was sort of like Baebo saved them,” Erin said. Today, Baebo and Lupin are not only housemates but also brothers in the truest sense.
