When drivers traveling down Sunrise Highway on Long Island, New York, recently noticed a tiny ball of fluff sleeping on a median in the center of the road, they knew exactly who to call. Merely 30 minutes later, local animal rescuer John Debacker was there and ready to help.
Upon reaching the scene, Debacker was heartbroken to see the kitten surrounded by speeding cars. “It was a terrifying scene,” the rescuer expressed in a Facebook post.
With the assistance of the Suffolk Police Department, Debacker quickly halted traffic and proceeded to rescue the stranded kitten. “I was very scared of the kitten darting away,” Debacker told The Dodo. “Luckily I snuck up behind her, and it went smoothly.”
Debacker examined the kitten, and despite suffering a minor road rash, she was otherwise unharmed. The 8-week-old kitten, once terrified and exposed, was now safely in Debacker’s care.
Once home, the kitten was given a chance to relax, enjoy some food, and rehydrate. “[She was] very feisty at first,” Debacker said. “But she calmed down a lot over time.”
Debacker coordinated with his friends at Last Hope Rescue, ensuring that the now-safe kitten would be looked after and loved until a forever home was found. The kitten remains with the rescue team, eagerly awaiting a bright future filled with care and affection.
Thanks to Debacker’s quick thinking and the support from local authorities, this kitten has a second chance at life. The dedicated efforts of animal rescuers and volunteers like Debacker are a testament to the compassion that binds communities together.
