What started as an ordinary visit to the Detroit Zoo transformed into a dramatic rescue, leaving spectators amazed by one man’s courage.

Onlookers gathered near the chimpanzee habitat were enjoying watching two chimps playfully chase one another around the enclosure’s trees with childlike enthusiasm. However, in an unexpected incident, one of the chimps miscalculated a jump and fell into the water-filled moat surrounding the habitat. The lighthearted scene quickly turned to alarm as the chimp struggled to remain above water, its panic immediately evident to everyone watching.
Chimpanzees, similar to many primates, are not natural swimmers and can easily drown in deep water. As the terrified chimp fought to keep its head above the surface, observers watched in dismay. Despite the dangerous situation unfolding before them, zoo personnel remained on the sidelines, declining to enter the moat due to safety protocols. That’s when one visitor decided action was necessary.
Rick Swope, a guest positioned near the front of the habitat, responded swiftly. Without delay, Rick scaled the barrier and entered the cloudy moat, resolved to save the struggling chimp. His choice came despite cautions from zoo personnel, who urgently attempted to discourage him, concerned for his wellbeing. But Rick continued forward, focused solely on saving the chimp thrashing in the water.
With the audience watching anxiously, Rick reached the chimp and grabbed it under the arms, trying to pull it toward the edge. The moment was intense as Rick maneuvered through the slick moat bottom, working to drag the chimp’s soaked, heavy body to safety. The risk was significant, but Rick’s determination and physical strength kept him going. After what felt like forever, he succeeded in bringing the chimp to the edge, where zoo personnel and visitors helped pull the animal onto dry ground.
The crowd burst into applause and cheers as Rick emerged from the water, drenched and tired, but successful. The chimp, though obviously disoriented, appeared uninjured and was promptly attended to by zoo personnel. Thanks to Rick’s selfless action, the chimp’s life was preserved, and Rick was celebrated as a hero.
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune following the rescue, Rick described how critical the situation had become. “It was the most pitiful thing I ever saw. The chimp had his hands up, and his head was sticking out of the water. He looked at the crowd like he wanted someone to rescue him.”
Despite the zoo personnel’s reluctance to step in, Rick knew he couldn’t simply observe and do nothing. “People were showing me which direction the chimp was in, but the water was so dirty I couldn’t see through it. I swam around until I found him. He was pretty lifeless, but I could tell he was still alive. He was looking right at me, like he knew I was there to help.”
Even as Rick attempted the brave rescue, he couldn’t help but consider the dangers. “I wondered if I should do mouth-to-mouth on a monkey, but then I thought he might bite me. And just as I was getting ready to act, I saw another chimp coming down the hill with its teeth bared. I wasn’t sure if it was coming for the other chimp or for me, so I got out of there fast.”
Rick’s courage made headlines, but he didn’t seek recognition. He explained, “I didn’t do it for attention. I just couldn’t stand there and watch an innocent creature drown right in front of me.”
This remarkable act of bravery touched many hearts, and serves as a powerful reminder of the profound connection between humans and animals. Rick Swope’s actions not only saved a life that day but inspired countless others with his compassion and courage.
This man is a genuine hero, and his quick thinking made all the difference in a critical moment.
