Jimmy Fallon, host of The Tonight Show, is grieving the loss of his beloved English Cream Golden Retriever, Gary. The dog affectionately known to many fans through Fallon’s social media posts and occasional show cameos, passed away just shy of her 14th birthday.

On October 20, Fallon delivered the devastating news through a heartfelt Instagram post. Alongside several loving photos, he honored Gary’s memory with a touching tribute that showcased the deep bond she shared with his family.

“She was the last name we signed on every birthday card,” Fallon wrote. “She was our first baby, a therapist, a pillow, a big sister, a schoolmarm, a comedian, a party girl, and a rebel.”

Known for her gentle demeanor, Gary wasn’t much of a watchdog — but that only added to her charm. Fallon shared with a touch of humor, “She would have let burglars in and shown them where we kept the bacon and American cheese slices.”

Fallon continued by highlighting the small, unforgettable joys Gary brought into his family’s life:

  • Swimming in the pool immediately after being shampooed
  • Rolling in the grass, completely carefree
  • Greeting everyone with a warm welcome, strangers included
  • Accompanying the Fallon family throughout their major life events

In his emotional message, Fallon reflected on the noticeable silence in their home without her presence. “The house misses you. The house is so quiet. The quiet is so loud,” he wrote. “But that quiet is slowly being filled with stories about you and laughter amongst the sniffles.”

Gary first entered Fallon’s life during a quirky comedy sketch on The Tonight Show, dressed in a suit and jokingly introduced as “Gary Frick Jr.” The moment stuck with Fallon and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, who soon adopted her. At a time when the couple was trying to start a family, Gary filled a much-needed role as both a comfort and companion through their journey.

Together with daughters Franny and Winnie, the Fallons created countless memories with Gary as their four-legged family member. Fallon noted how integral she became to their lives: from showing up in interviews to appearing in his monologues and behind-the-scenes social content. “It’s companionship. It’s so much love. It’s unconditional love,” he once said in reference to life with Gary. “I try to do everything with my dog.”

Although her physical presence is now gone, Gary continues to live on through shared family stories, heartfelt memories, and enduring love. Her legacy speaks to the profound impact pets make in our lives—providing comfort, laughter, and unwavering loyalty.

Fallon concluded his tribute with words that resonate deeply with anyone who has loved and lost a dog: “Thank you for everything. Gosh, we miss you so much. Goodnight, Gary.”
