Kindhearted Shop Owner Feeds Hungry Stray Animals Every Day

What began as a quiet exchange between a shopkeeper and a stray cat has blossomed into a daily ritual rooted in compassion. In a bustling Turkish meat shop, a small stray cat cautiously stepped inside one day, her gaze locked longingly onto the meat displayed on the counter. Rising onto her hind legs, she didn’t meow or demand—just waited, silently, filled with hope. That moment touched something deep within Ikram Korkmazer, the shop owner, and sparked a tradition that now defines his business.

Stray cat in meat shop

Ikram Korkmazer, 51, has always had a heart for animals. Familiar with the local strays that wander the streets near his shop, he never ignored their hunger. His solution was simple: share what he had. Leftover scraps that might have gone to waste instead became lifelines for cats and dogs searching for a meal.

One stray cat, in particular, changed everything. She emerged from the street one afternoon and perched herself by the counter. Her delicate behavior—hopeful yet unassuming—caught Korkmazer’s attention. He offered her some meat scraps, which she devoured gratefully. Something unspoken passed between them: a bond formed in mutual understanding.

The cat returned the next day, and the next. She began visiting multiple times a day, always standing on her hind legs to peer over the counter like a polite, furry customer. Over time, Korkmazer named her Yesim. She became a fixture of the shop, and brought company—her kitten, equally gentle and trusting. Their visits became part of the shop’s daily rhythm.

Yesim and her kitten

Yesim had her preferences. She loved beef, especially organs like the heart, spleen, and kidneys. Visiting five or six times per day, she transformed from a wary stray into a confident presence, adored by the shop staff and by followers online once Korkmazer began documenting the visits.

When Yesim passed away, the loss was deeply felt. In honor of her memory, Korkmazer renamed the store Yesim Meat Gallery. Her kitten continued the tradition, faithfully showing up for meals. The legacy of one humble cat continues through this daily act of kindness.

Feeding Strays

Today, the shop serves not just customers but a growing community of stray animals. On average, Korkmazer and his team feed:

  • 7–8 cats per day
  • 8–10 dogs daily

These animals wait calmly outside the shop, showing an astonishing level of patience and trust. They know they are safe, cared for, and welcome.

Videos capturing these moments—cats popping into the shop, dogs waiting with wagging tails—are shared regularly by Korkmazer on his social media. They have gone viral, resonating with audiences across the globe who are touched by his consistent compassion and generosity.

Some passersby misunderstand or criticize the practice, but Korkmazer remains steadfast in his mission. With his family and shop colleagues now assisting, the effort has become a team commitment. For them, it’s about more than feeding animals—it’s about honoring life with dignity, no matter how small.

What began with a single hungry feline has flourished into a peaceful coexistence between man and stray. A simple gesture turned into a ritual of love. One that reminds us all that compassion doesn’t require grand gestures—just an open heart and a willingness to share.
