In Lake Mary, Florida, a dramatic rescue unfolded as storm clouds loomed overhead and the clock ticked down on a life-or-death mission. A tiny four-month-old kitten had fallen into an underground storm drain, and with heavy rain fast approaching, first responders rushed to save him from being swept away.
The distress call came at a critical moment. A concerned citizen had heard the faint, desperate meows coming from below the street. The Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) and Seminole County Animal Services (SCAS) were quickly on the scene, forming a united front in a race against an encroaching storm.
According to SCAS, initial efforts to lure the kitten out of the drain involved humane traps. When these attempts failed, the team had no choice but to take a more hands-on approach. Firefighter and paramedic Dave Gomez took lead on the risky mission and descended into the drain to bring the kitten to safety.
Removing the heavy metal grate that sealed off the catch basin, Gomez geared up and descended the ladder into the dark drainage system. Carrying a can of cat food and a long pole, Gomez knelt inside the basin, calling gently to the kitten who hid deeper in the pipe. Though hesitant at first, the kitten’s desperate hunger and Gomez’s coaxing eventually won him over.
After several tense minutes, the small gray tabby inched forward toward the scent of food and the sound of safety. In a split second, Gomez reached forward and scooped the kitten up, holding him securely in both hands.
Just as the team secured the kitten into the SCAS vehicle, the skies opened up. Torrential rain began to pour, quickly flooding the drain from which he’d just been rescued. “The rescue happened just in time — within the hour, the storm drain was completely washed out by the downpour,” SCAS stated.
Back at SCAS headquarters, staff gave the kitten a full examination and plenty of much-needed nourishment. Amazingly, he had emerged from the ordeal in good health. In honor of his brave rescuer, the team fittingly named him Dave.
The rescue video, later shared on their official Facebook page, showcased the courage, precision, and compassion of the first responders. In just over a week, the uplifting story found its happy ending when a loving family came forward to adopt the kitten. His new family gave him a fresh start — and a new name: Apollo, a symbol of strength and survival.
Apollo now enjoys the warmth and safety of his forever home, a far cry from the cold, dark storm drain he once called home. His journey, from a trapped kitten to a beloved pet, reminds us of the impact that a few determined hearts can have — especially in a moment when every second counts.
