Kitten with Large Head Rescued: X-Ray Unveils Surprising Truth
Sydney Mollentine, the dedicated CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC), was spending a leisurely Fourth of July with her family when an urgent message disrupted her peaceful day. A staff member sent a text, alerting her about a stray kitten brought into the shelter with a severely swollen head that required immediate medical attention.
Without hesitation, Mollentine put aside her personal plans to assist the kitten, swiftly packing her children into the car to rush to the shelter. Despite the kitten’s apparent discomfort, the tiny creature, later named Megamind, appeared to have a surprisingly calm and sweet demeanor, craving affection from those around him.
“He was still very sweet and active,” Mollentine explained to The Dodo. “It didn’t really seem to bother him a whole lot.”
Diagnosis and Treatment
The HSGKC staff quickly dubbed the kitten Megamind, after the character with a notably large head. With the assistance of her team, Mollentine examined Megamind’s head, looking for indicators of the possible cause. Everyone hoped it wasn’t a case of hydrocephalus — a severe condition caused by cerebrospinal fluid build-up in the brain. Fortunately, Mollentine suspected it was an abscess filled with fluid outside the brain, a far more treatable issue.
“I had suspicions when I felt it that it was more of an abscess versus hydrocephalus just because of the way it was really bouncy and fluid-filled,” Mollentine said.
An X-ray was the next step to confirm that Megamind’s skull had no deformities or fractures. Relievingly, the results showed that his skull was intact, meaning an abscess was indeed the correct diagnosis.
A Journey Towards Healing
Following the confirmation, the team gently drained the fluid from the kitten’s head. Megamind astounded everyone with his composure and resilience throughout the process.
“He was such a trooper,” Mollentine remarked. “He just sat there and continued to be a sweet cat.”
The only part that seemed to upset Megamind was the temporary solitude after the procedure, missing the warmth and attention from his human friends.
“[He] was extremely agitated and angry that we had stopped holding him,” Mollentine added with a smile.
Megamind stayed under care in the hospital for a week, after which he came out rejuvenated and cheerful. His charm and sweetness soon led him to a forever home. Remarkably, the person who initially found him chose to adopt him, completing his circle of care and love.
Mollentine’s quick response and the shelter’s dedicated care ensured that Megamind went from a state of distress to a cherished pet, a testament to the power of compassion and dedication.
