Lost Cat Hears Mom’s Voice and Tries to Answer Phone

A Mysterious Arrival at Apple Valley Shelter

When a stunning blue-eyed cat was brought into the Apple Valley Animal Shelter in California, staff thought he was just another stray. However, the calm, social demeanor of the feline, later named Melo, made rescuers feel there was more to the story.

Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue quickly stepped in to help. Lisa Johnson, a coordinator at the rescue, couldn’t shake the feeling that Melo wasn’t a lost stray — but a missing pet.

“He was so beautiful and friendly, I just felt like this is someone’s cat,” Johnson told The Dodo.

The Search for Melo’s Family

Determined to uncover Melo’s backstory, Johnson got to work. She made flyers and posted on PawBoost, a pet recovery website. While browsing through multiple lost pet listings, she stumbled across a post from February — a woman named Serena had lost a cat that bore a striking resemblance to Melo while moving to a new home.

“I wasn’t sure because his hair was shorter and he looked younger,” Johnson explained. “But the cat had the same markings, and she mentioned his beautiful blue eyes, which are so blue they almost glow.”

An Emotional Recognition

Hoping her hunch was right, Johnson reached out to Serena. They exchanged photos and videos in an effort to confirm if this cat was truly Serena’s long-lost Melo. While speaking on the phone, Johnson decided to put Serena on speaker — and that’s when something incredible happened.

“He totally reacted to her saying his name and even tried to grab the phone,” Johnson shared, shocked by the emotional connection.

Johnson knew with absolute certainty — this was indeed Melo. The bond between the cat and Serena had not faded, even after months of separation and hundreds of miles of distance.

“He knew her,” Johnson later wrote on Instagram, overwhelmed at the joyful reunion in progress.

The Journey Home

There was just one hurdle left: Melo was found eight hours away from Serena’s home in Sacramento. Fortunately, Pilots N Paws — an organization known for flying rescue animals — volunteered to help reunite Melo with his mom.

“Melo is such a sweet boy that I just handed him over to the pilot’s arms,” Johnson said. “There was no need for a crate.”

  • He sat on the pilots’ laps during the flight leg to Los Angeles
  • He waited calmly under the seat while they prepped for takeoff

A Happy Homecoming

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Johnson, the staff at Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue, and Pilots N Paws, Melo made it home safe and sound. Serena’s months-long search was finally over, and Melo was back where he belonged — showered in love, warmth, and familiarity.

Stories like Melo’s remind us of the unbreakable connection between pets and their humans, proving that even miles apart and many months gone, love finds its way back home.
