A Surprising Encounter in the Garden Section
Last week, Lowe’s employee Ryan Finchum was working outside in the outdoor lawn and garden section of the store when he heard an unusual sound — a meow. Curious, he paused and looked around, only to spot a cat staring at him from behind a fence.
As he walked around completing his tasks, the cat followed him, walking beside him and sitting down in the aisles while meowing persistently. Clearly seeking attention, she had no intention of letting Ryan out of her sight.
Abandoned — But Not Alone
Moved by the cat’s friendliness, Finchum suspected she might be a lost pet. But it quickly became evident that someone had intentionally abandoned the kitty. The heartbreaking clue was a rusty crate, found overgrown in the grass near the road.
“There was an abandoned, rusty animal crate over in the grass close to the road,” shared Makena Waldrip, Finchum’s fiancée. “It had a hole in it and looked like it had been there for some time.”
A Heartfelt Rescue
Ryan called Makena to let her know what was happening. Despite being out with her friends, she rushed over to help. Ryan’s instinct was strong:
“He told me, ‘I have a feeling about this cat. There’s something about her. I just feel like she’s supposed to be ours,’” Makena recalled.
The couple was unsure how the cat would react to being taken in a car, but to their surprise, she was calm and cooperative.
“She went right into the carrier I brought and chirped at us the whole way home,” said Waldrip.
Meet Tilly, the Sweetest Couch Companion
The couple set her up in a cozy space separate from their two existing cats, allowing her to settle in peacefully. Makena sat with her for over an hour, and during that time, the cat showered her with nuzzles and cuddles.
“She is genuinely such a sweetheart, and I still can’t understand why anyone would dump her like that,” Makena said of the cat they decided to name Tilly.
A New Life Full of Love
It didn’t take long for Tilly to make herself at home. She spends most days wrapped in warm blankets on the couch, enjoying the peaceful life she now has.
“She’s our couch potato; every day when I come home from work, she’s in the same spot that she was when I left eight hours earlier,” Makena laughed. “She loves to relax and be cozy, but she’s never turned down a chance to chase the laser toy.”
A Happy Ending for All
While Tilly is undeniably lucky to have been rescued, it’s clear that her human companions feel that they are the real winners in this unlikely story.
“We are so proud and happy to be her mom and dad,” said Waldrip.
