Man Finds Missing Cat And Its Companion Trapped In Deep Hole
Just before the turn of the new year, a family in Gisborne, Australia, found themselves in distress after their beloved cat mysteriously vanished. After searching tirelessly, they discovered her in the most unexpected place—13 feet below ground in a construction site hole. But she wasn’t alone. Another cat was trapped alongside her.
Manfred John Zabinskas, a rescuer from Five Freedoms Animal Rescue and East Trentham Wildlife Shelter, was called to the scene to lend his expertise. Upon arrival, he realized that this would be a challenging rescue.
“When I looked down the holes, I was astounded by how deep they were,” Zabinskas told The Dodo. “I immediately realized that it was going to be a difficult rescue and was worried that my equipment wouldn’t be adequate.” At first, he couldn’t even confirm that the animals were cats, as they were covered in dirt and lying completely still.
Despite the challenge, Zabinskas was determined to save them. His usual rescue equipment wasn’t sufficient for the depth of the hole, so he had to improvise.
The rescue mission began with:
With great care and patience, Zabinskas managed to pull both cats to safety. Though they were free, they were terrified and desperately trying to flee.
“They were terrified and wanted to run off,” Zabinskas recalled. “We were very careful to restrain them and not get bitten, but also to not let them slip away and end up down another hole.”
One of the cats was identified as the family’s missing pet and was soon reunited with her relieved owners. The second cat, however, was a mystery.
The unknown feline was transported to a veterinary clinic for a thorough check-up. She was given food, water, and scanned for a microchip in hopes of locating her family. If no owner was identified, plans were made to find her a loving home.
The outcome of this dramatic rescue was nothing short of a relief. The missing pet was back with her family, and the second cat had a future filled with hope. Thanks to the dedication and quick action of the rescuers, these two feline companions got a second chance.
“It was a tough rescue,” Five Freedoms Animal Rescue shared on Facebook, “but at least for these two cats and a loving family, the new year is starting off right.”
This heartwarming story is a testament to the power of compassion, teamwork, and quick thinking in saving lives—both human and animal.
