When doctors told Eric O’Grey he had only five years to live, he faced the harsh reality of his declining health head-on. At 51 years old, Eric weighed 340 pounds and was battling type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. With a grim future ahead of him, he turned not just to medicine, but to something far more unexpected—a rescue dog. That decision would change his life forever.

After consulting with a nutritionist, Eric was advised to adopt a dog to help him establish a healthier routine and find renewed joy in life. Enter Peety: an obese, middle-aged rescue dog who, like Eric, had been overlooked and discarded. The connection was instant. Eric saw a reflection of his own struggles in Peety, and together they began a journey of healing, both physically and emotionally.

Eric and Peety

Peety had been abandoned by his previous owners due to his weight and age, characteristics that made him less likely to find a home. But Eric wasn’t looking for a perfect dog—he was searching for a companion who understood struggle. As the two bonded over daily walks and healthier meals, their lives began to transform.

With newfound motivation, Eric adopted a plant-based diet and committed to walking with Peety every day. Consistency paid off: Eric lost 140 pounds in just one year, and Peety also shed 25 pounds. But their transformation extended beyond the physical realm. Eric regained confidence and happiness, while Peety evolved into a joyful, loyal companion full of affection.

Eric and Peety transformation

In this partnership, Eric found more than a pet—he found a purpose. Their shared commitment to health and unconditional love became the bedrock of a new life. Eric began making friends, building connections in the community, and eventually even found love. Peety, once lonely and abandoned, now thrived in a space where he was cherished.

Tragically, in 2015, Peety passed away from cancer. The loss devastated Eric, but the lessons his beloved dog had taught him remained etched in his heart. Peety had taught Eric how to live again, and his memory continued to be a guiding force.

After Peety’s passing, Eric became a certified running coach and animal adoption advocate. He began speaking publicly about how adopting a shelter dog can not only change a human’s life but quite literally save it. Eric’s personal transformation became a symbol of hope for others dealing with obesity, illness, and emotional isolation.

His journey serves as a powerful reminder of what can happen when two broken souls come together with love, trust, and shared determination to heal.

  • Eric lost 140 pounds and reversed multiple chronic health issues
  • Peety shed 25 pounds and experienced love and care in his final years
  • Their story inspired millions through the short film “Eric & Peety”
  • Eric went on to help others as a certified running coach

Their story gained widespread recognition thanks to the short film Eric & Peety, part of the Mutual Rescue initiative, which portrayed the transformative impact of their relationship. The emotional power of the film shed light on the deep healing that can take place through adoption and companionship.
