Meet Chonkers: Pier 39’s 2,000-Pound Wonder

Affectionately called Chonkers, this Steller sea lion tips the scales at nearly 2,000 pounds. He towers over the typical California sea lions at the pier, his sheer size drawing people nearer as they marvel at not just his enormity but the serenity he exudes. Despite his impressive size, Chonkers’ calm demeanor is what makes witnesses linger, fostering a sense of wonder and admiration.

A Familiar Figure Returns

Chonkers is no stranger to Pier 39. His visits are a celebrated occurrence, happening every few years like clockwork, as though he follows a mysterious migration path known only to him. Harbor Master Sheila Chandor notes that Chonkers’ stays are often brief, usually a few days, before he vanishes back into the expansiveness of the Pacific.

However, this time marks a delightful deviation as Chonkers has graced the pier for over a month, resting contentedly among the docks. Initially accompanied by a younger Steller sea lion, Chonkers now remains solitary, unfazed by the human audience observing his every move.

Drawn by the Bay’s Bounty

The reason for Chonkers’ prolonged stay is straightforward yet vital: an abundance of food. Presently, San Francisco Bay is teeming with fish, providing all the nourishment Chonkers could need without necessitating extensive travel. For a majestic creature of his size, such abundance is crucial, allowing him to conserve energy and enjoy a sense of tranquility.

“There’s a lot of fish in the bay right now,” Chandor explains, emphasizing that food availability largely drives these impressive visits. For Chonkers, this stay signifies a peaceful interlude amid the relentless movements dictated by survival.

The Gentle Giant

Despite his size, Chonkers is remarkably unthreatening. He remains reserved, rarely vocalizing, and seems largely indifferent to the gathering crowds, which often describe him as peaceful, sometimes even shy. His presence is grounding and offers a calming influence, with his slow, deliberate movements and the soothing rhythm of his breathing providing a rare look into the serenity of nature.

Catch a glimpse of Chonkers early in the day, typically between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Those visiting later may leave with shared stories and photos as their only souvenirs of this gentle giant.

The Heartbeat of Pier 39

Chonkers has become a beloved sensation on Pier 39, attracting visitors from as far away as Michigan and Canada, seeking to experience this enchanting creature firsthand. As tourism slows, his presence rejuvenates the atmosphere, drawing people together in shared wonder and reminding us of the wild world’s continuous touch on our own.

Chonkers’ rippling impact is more than just a momentary attraction; he’s a gentle reminder of the beauty and tranquility that nature offers when we take the time to observe and appreciate its wonders.
