Meet the Overlooked Shelter Cat Deserving a Loving Home
Last month, an adorable cat named Sausage Link made her way to the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center (HBPAC) in New Jersey. Immediately upon her arrival, the staff and volunteers noticed something unique about her that set her apart from other cats.
Sausage Link was born with a congenital difference that causes her bottom lip to stick out further than her top lip. Initially, animal control, who discovered her and brought her to HBPAC, thought this might be due to a jaw injury. However, a veterinary examination confirmed that her condition is harmless.
“They determined that there’s no painfulness,” Shawna Donahue, the shelter’s lifesaving coordinator, noted in an interview with The Dodo.
It’s no wonder that everyone at HBPAC has fallen in love with Sausage Link. Her affectionate nature and laid-back temperament have endeared her to both staff and volunteers alike.
“The staff loves her,” Donahue shared. “Our volunteers love her. She’s super sweet.” Unfortunately, there is a chance that Sausage Link might be overlooked by potential adopters due to her unusual appearance.
Despite how lovable she is, there seems to be a societal bias toward cats that look a certain way. Kathryn Custer, a dedicated volunteer at the shelter, commented on social media:
“People may call her ‘ugly,’ but she has the sweetest soul with so much love,” she wrote. “She doesn’t know she’s different.”
At 6 years old, Sausage Link provides a perfect companionship opportunity for someone seeking a relaxed and easy-going feline friend. She’s the ideal cat for curling up with while reading a book or enjoying a movie.
“She seems like a laid-back girl who would love to just lounge on a couch and hang out with you,” Donahue remarked.
Adopting Sausage Link would bring immense joy not only to her but also to everyone who has been caring for her at HBPAC. Adopting a shelter animal in need is always rewarding, but seeing Sausage Link start a new life at 6 years old would be truly special.
“Anytime an animal gets out of here and into a loving home, it really makes the staff happy,” Donahue expressed.
Ultimately, Sausage Link needs a family that will cherish her uniqueness and shower her with love and affection. She deserves a home that tells her she’s beautiful every day, a sentiment echoed by Custer:
“She deserves a loving home that tells her she’s beautiful every day,” she said.
