Mysterious Pink Cat Baffles Shelter Staff’s Imagination and Curiosity
Last week, Great Plains SPCA welcomed an extraordinary new resident, a cat named Casper. What made this feline stand out was his unusual pink fur, a sight that left the shelter staff both puzzled and curious.
The Mystery Unveiled
As the shelter staff peered into Casper’s crate, they couldn’t help but wonder if their eyes were deceiving them. Was he really rose-colored? Hathaway Maranda, Vice President of Philanthropy and Engagement at Great Plains SPCA, explained their wonderment, saying, “We’re looking in his crate and we’re going, ‘What happened to him? Is he actually pink?’”
The explanation from Casper’s former owners revealed that the pink hue was entirely accidental. During a hair dyeing session, their daughter had an unforeseen mishap when Casper jumped into the sink and rolled in the dye. Thankfully, the result was an adorably rare cat.
Health and Safety Concerns
Understandably concerned for Casper’s health, SPCA staff took him to the vet to ensure that the dye posed no risks. The examination confirmed that the dye would not make him sick, even when he grooms himself, and that it would fade naturally over time. Maranda remarked, “It is not something we’re going to remove from him because it’ll just naturally grow out.”
A Word of Caution
While Casper’s pink fur was an accident, experts warn against intentionally dyeing pets with human hair dye. Such products can irritate their skin and eyes and cause respiratory issues. Pets are naturally perfect in their own way and don’t need artificial colors to enhance their charm.
Casper, the Pink Sensation
At Great Plains SPCA, Casper’s temporary bubblegum hue prompted a creative spurt among staff who devised humorous nicknames for the singular feline. Maranda noted, “Instead of Casper the Friendly Ghost, we say Casper the Pink Cat.”
Casper’s enchanting pink fur did not affect his behavior; rather, it brought him a wealth of attention. Maranda mused, “I don’t think he knows, or he sort of likes the attention. He either has no idea or he’s just like, ‘Wow, everyone thinks I’m so cute now.’”
A New Beginning
What truly endears Casper to everyone isn’t his pink fur but his sweet nature and affectionate demeanor. Maranda shared, “We love him. He’s adorable. He’s really friendly with all of us.”
Unsurprisingly, it took only a week for Casper to get adopted. Now, with a new loving family, he can continue to enchant those around him without relying on his unique exterior. Maranda concluded, “He really was a sweet guy, and we are so happy he has found a loving forever home.”
