Mystical Kitten: The Rare Survivor Defying AI Misconceptions

Meet Dorito, a feisty 5-month-old kitten who is taking the internet by storm with her unique charm and oversized, enchanting eyes. Unlike typical kittens who meow, Dorito squeaks and howls, and she has a fondness for being cradled like a baby.

Contrary to some Facebook commenters who speculated about AI tampering, this image of Dorito is indeed real. While some have jokingly referred to her as an oracle or an alien, Dorito is simply a unique kitten with an extraordinary look.

Dorito’s oversized eyes are a result of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a perilous disease causing inflammation. Such cases are rare, and not all cats with FIP exhibit symptoms like Dorito’s radiant orbs. Less than a quarter develop any eye issues, and those with iridescent eyes are exceptionally uncommon.

Dorito, along with her sister Cheeto, was discovered behind a dumpster in Little Canada, Minnesota, by a kind-hearted passerby. Both kittens were suffering from colds and had cuts on their ears.

“Her eyes weren’t enlarged when she first arrived,” said Mandy Dwyer, director at The Bitty Kitty Brigade. Initially, only one of Dorito’s eyes appeared cloudy. Both kittens made a quick recovery from their respiratory infections, but soon after, Dorito’s eyes began to swell.

Following an examination by an ophthalmologist, Dorito was diagnosed with FIP.

“Treatment for FIP has only been available for around eight years,” shared Dwyer, “and only became legal in the U.S. in 2024.”

Thankfully, Dorito’s veterinary team promptly addressed the FIP, enabling the young kitten to become disease-free. Although her vision is limited, she remains healthy in every other aspect.

“The pressure in her eyes has normalized,” noted Dwyer. “Dorito receives over-the-counter eye lubricant drops to maintain moisture since she can’t fully close her eyelids.”

While it remains uncertain if Dorito’s eyes will revert to a typical size, her future is bright, especially since her foster mom decided to adopt Dorito and Cheeto after falling in love with them during their time at The Bitty Kitty Brigade.

“She’s a cuddle bug,” shared Dorito’s new mom. “She’s always eager to explore and show extreme gentleness. Even during play, she ensures I never feel the scratch of a claw.”

Despite efforts to convince people of Dorito’s reality, many still comment online: “You cannot convince me this cat isn’t magic!”
