Newborn Kittens Found on Car Roof from Faint Cries
Last month, Jennifer Jones received an unexpected surprise when her son returned from taking out the trash. He reported hearing meowing sounds emanating from the family’s Jeep. Intrigued and somewhat concerned, Jones followed her son to the driveway to investigate further.
The Jeep was covered with a tarp, an effort by Jones’ husband to protect it from the elements. Despite a thorough inspection of the vehicle, including the wheel wells and behind the seats, no animals were initially found. The mystery of the meows persisted until Jones and her son fully uncovered the tarp, revealing a small face peeking out from the rooftop.
Perching on the back bumper, Jones discovered not one but three newborn kittens huddled together on the Jeep’s roof. It wasn’t long before the mother cat, later named Lumen, joined them, positioning herself discreetly under the car. Lumen, a member of the local cat colony in Bowie, Maryland, had been spotted previously by Jones, though her pregnancy went unnoticed.
With a thunderstorm looming, Jones acted swiftly. Concerned about frightening the mother away by handling the kittens too much, she placed them in a shoebox on the Jeep roof, covered them gently with a towel, and reached out to Paul Nadler from Bowie Citizens for Local Animal Welfare (CLAW). Nadler arrived as the rain began to fall, and together they worked to secure the feline family safely.
Nadler set up a trap adjacent to a transfer cage where the kittens were placed, encouraging Mama Lumen to attempt a rescue. Shortly, both mother and kittens were safely placed in the care of a foster home. According to Nadler, this was an unusual scenario as newborns are typically hidden under secure areas like porches rather than atop vehicles.
Commenters on social media speculated that Lumen’s choice was perhaps to protect her kittens from predators or to provide them warmth from the sun. Regardless, the kittens are now safe under the care of foster guardian Lori Arduino. They are well-fed, thanks to Lumen, who remains cautiously open to human interaction.
The kittens, Halo, Flash, and Aura, are thriving and rapidly approaching readiness for adoption. While Halo stands out as robust, Flash is noted for his consistency, while Aura, though initially smaller, exhibits a resilient spirit.
- Halo: The strongest and most robust
- Flash: Steady and consistent
- Aura: Resilient with a fighter’s spirit
As the kittens grow, Lumen’s journey towards trust continues. Ultimately, her path may diverge from conventional adoption due to her feral tendencies. Meanwhile, Jones and her family continue to cherish their unexpected rooftop discovery.
