A few weeks ago, employees from Point Guard Management visited one of their recently vacated rental homes in Wichita, Kansas, to begin preparations for renovations. However, upon arrival, they stumbled upon a heart-wrenching note left on the front door by a concerned neighbor.
The note detailed a heartbreaking situation – the departing tenants had left behind a cat and her newborn kittens. With animal welfare now a priority, the property visit took an unexpected turn toward rescue and compassion.
Meet Sissy: The Abandoned Yet Friendly Cat
Patricia Mitnaul, Social Media and Content Creator at Point Guard Management, immediately took action. Within minutes of arriving, the mother cat emerged and approached Mitnaul with affectionate enthusiasm. In a touching Instagram update, Mitnaul shared how the cat, later nicknamed Sissy, wouldn’t leave her side.
“This cat is literally so friendly,” Mitnaul shared. “I can’t walk without her walking between my legs.”
Searching for the Missing Kittens
While Sissy received much-needed food and water, Mitnaul knew there were kittens still unaccounted for. The search soon led to a cutout in the house’s foundation, revealing access to a crawl space—a likely hiding spot for the scared kittens.
Help Arrives: WAAL Joins the Rescue Mission
Mitnaul reached out to Wichita Animal Action League (WAAL), who sent a team to assist with trapping the kittens. One kitten was caught in the garage, while the remaining two had retreated into the crawl space.
With determination, Kirsten, a Point Guard Management team member, volunteered to crawl under the house in hopes of retrieving the elusive kittens. Though that attempt was unsuccessful, rescuers soon managed to lure the kittens out with food.
Saved in the Nick of Time
Once all three kittens were safely out, WAAL quickly transported the feline family to the vet. The diagnosis was severe – all four cats were suffering from roundworms. Without timely medical attention, Sissy likely wouldn’t have survived.
“Mom got pretty sick from them and likely would not have survived without help,” Mitnaul told The Dodo.
A Safe New Start
Following veterinary care and treatment, Sissy and her kittens began to recover at WAAL’s rescue facility. Now safe and cared for, they continue to grow stronger by the day. One kitten remains underweight but is making steady progress toward catching up with its siblings.
“They are almost to 2 pounds, one is a bit of a runt but is catching up,” said Mitnaul. “Overall, they are doing well.”
A Full-Circle Ending
In a beautiful twist of fate, Kirsten—the same caring employee who ventured into the crawl space—has decided to adopt at least one of the kittens. Once all the cats are weaned and fully vetted, they will be up for adoption through WAAL, ready to find their forever families.
What started as a visit to a vacant property turned into a life-saving rescue mission, and a testament to the power of compassion and community.
