Pet Sitter Shocked by Surprise Twin Cat During Visit
A Routine Pet Sitting Turned into a Feline Mystery
In August, Dylan LaPort and Jasmine Johnson were two days into a month-long pet-sitting job for a family friend in upstate New York when they received the text message no pet sitter ever wants to see: A neighbor spotted what looked like one of their four indoor cats—outside.
“We were like, ‘No way! There’s, like, no way that this cat got outside,’” LaPort told The Dodo. “We were very cautious.”
A Frantic Search for Nemo
The missing cat, Nemo, a long-haired black feline with piercing yellow eyes, seemed to have vanished from the house. LaPort and Johnson searched every possible hiding place but came up empty-handed. Convinced Nemo had gotten out, they rallied friends and neighbors for a search party around the neighborhood.
After two anxious hours, LaPort spotted a black cat several doors away. A helpful neighbor managed to catch him and handed him over. Relieved, LaPort snapped a photo and sent it to Nemo’s owner for confirmation.
The reply confirmed their hopes: the cat was indeed Nemo—or so it seemed.
An Unexpected Change in Personality
Over the following week, LaPort and Johnson noticed something peculiar. Nemo, typically shy and averse to being touched, was now seeking out cuddles and acting unusually friendly.
“We’re like, ‘Wow, maybe his adventure outside really changed him,’” LaPort joked. But the truth was far stranger than they’d imagined.
The Shocking Discovery at 2 A.M.
One night, Johnson got up for a glass of water and froze. Five cats were watching her—and two of them were identical. Sitting side by side were two fluffy black cats with striking yellow eyes: two Nemos?
Realization dawned: they had been caring for the wrong cat all week. Johnson recorded a video of the eerie discovery, which was later posted on Facebook by LaPort with the caption, “The moment we found out we stole someone’s cat.”
A Case of Mistaken Identity
The viral video reached Kelly Aleschus, the neighbor who had initially helped hand over the cat. She had been searching for her own cat, Sidney, for days. Sidney, a 13-year-old indoor cat with identical features to Nemo, had apparently slipped out unnoticed.
“I looked and I’m like … ‘Sidney’s alive,’” Aleschus said. “I still can’t believe I actually gave him my own cat.”
The Real Nemo Was Hiding All Along
Turns out, the real Nemo had been inside the house the entire time—expertly hiding in a place no one thought to check. His owner, Rachael Jones, said Nemo had a reputation for hiding in bizarre spots.
“He was inside my bed frame once … The box spring had a hole in it, and I could feel something moving around in there,” Jones recalled. “Eventually, he came out.”
Harmony Among Confusion
Despite the unexpected situation, the five cats in the house—Nemo, Sidney, and the three others—managed to co-exist peacefully. There were no cat fights, hissing matches, or boundary wars. Sidney fit right in, like he belonged there all along.
- Nemo: The real cat in hiding
- Sidney: The mistaken “Nemo” who just wanted cuddles
- Other Feline Friends: Three other cats happily oblivious to the whole swap
Now, with Sidney back home and Nemo accounted for, all five cats are safe and sound—though the hysteria hasn’t completely passed. Nemo recently gave his owner another scare by disappearing again, only to be found chilling on the upstairs porch hours later.
“I’m like, ‘I already looked there,’” Jones said. “What is happening?”
It’s a pet-sitting story that LaPort and Johnson—and their feline friends—won’t forget anytime soon.
