Prosecutors Weigh Charges For Woman Who Dumped Senior Dog At Park And Drove Away

Henry is a 13-year-old lab who has resided with his owner since he was a puppy. But this didn’t prevent Henry’s owner from abandoning this faithful companion at a municipal park in Vancouver, Washington, and – as her elderly dog watched forlornly – climbing into her vehicle and speeding off.

Luckily, this devastating incident was recorded on a resident’s security camera, which prompted these concerned citizens to alert authorities. Meanwhile, the dog, who loyally waited for his owner’s return, was transferred to a local animal organization, I Paw’d It Forward, where he’ll stay while authorities investigate this troubling instance of animal neglect.

“This individual believed the ideal solution for disposing of a dog was to transport him to Orchards Park in Vancouver, WA tonight and desert him there to observe her drive away in her Tesla with Oregon Plates,” outraged rescuers posted on Facebook, where they shared this distressing footage.

The video shows Henry exiting the car with his owner, clearly believing he’s embarking on a regular walk. But after the woman discards her dog’s collar and identification and guides him to the trailhead, she rushes back to her vehicle and rapidly departs. Fortunately, the video also gained traction online, generating numerous tips identifying the woman’s identity, vehicle, pet, and residence. Shortly thereafter, authorities had located Henry’s owner at her residence in Portland, Oregon.

But while Henry’s owner maintained she felt compelled to surrender her dog, rescuers weren’t convinced by her explanation, which appeared disingenuous and contrived. “This animal abuser arrived after Animal Control posted her door in Portland,” I Paw’d It Forward wrote on Facebook. “She navigated her luxurious Tesla to the meeting so she could shed her artificial tears and fabricate her fictional narrative. She did eventually acknowledge it, but she truly had no alternative. I Have ZERO COMPASSION FOR HER. Less than zero even.”

One aspect that particularly angered rescuers was how Henry’s owner allegedly informed her acquaintances and relatives that Henry had passed away, all while the devoted canine – according to the neighbor’s surveillance footage — was patiently lingering across state boundaries for his owner’s reappearance. “Later tonight, I will calm down and be less antagonistic and probably even suggest some options for individuals who are struggling, but currently, I am going to take a moment and feel sorrow for Henry,” rescuers wrote. “Sorrow for a 13-year-old dog who had to even experience one moment of what it feels like to be deserted.”

Meanwhile, legal authorities are contemplating the suitable punishment for Henry’s owner, who might face misdemeanor and civil accusations. “Abandonment is classified as animal cruelty,” an animal control representative involved in the situation told KATU2. “It was her perception that she had exhausted her options based on what she had conveyed to our investigating officers. She was unable to secure a home for him independently and had exhausted her options, in her mind.”
