“He was just born that extraordinary.” Meet Aardvark – a charming, lovable pup whose outer appearance perfectly matches his delightful inner spirit.
Last January, a kind stranger discovered Aardvark wandering the streets of Baltimore City and brought him to the Maryland SPCA (MDSPCA). The shelter staff were amazed when they first laid eyes on him – a 50-pound canine with a face reminiscent of an animated character and distinctive paddle-like paws.

“To be honest, everyone couldn’t help but smile when they saw him,” Brittany Roger, a digital specialist for the MDSPCA, shared with The Dodo. “His expression and character brought joy to everyone around.”
When examined by the shelter’s veterinarians, they determined that Aardvark was just a youngster – merely 8 months old – and his distinctive smaller lower jaw was a natural feature. “Visitors often think he’s survived some sort of trauma,” Roger explained. “But they’re always relieved to learn that he was just born that extraordinary.”

Aardvark’s facial difference never impacts his happiness or prevents him from being an absolute sweetheart. “He not only has a healthy appetite, but he also enjoys having toys to nibble on – though he’s never destructive,” Roger noted. “His vibrant health makes his unique charm even more captivating.”

Even more endearing than his distinctive appearance is his laid-back nature. This special pup simply loves being surrounded by people who appreciate and care for him.
“He’s a lively, cheerful, outgoing fellow,” Roger shared. “We have a blast getting him dressed up and taking him on adventures because nothing seems to faze him.”

However, securing a permanent home has proven challenging for Aardvark. Despite the shelter describing him as an “all-purpose” dog who’s “so friendly he could befriend even an inanimate object,” potential adopters keep falling through.
“He’s received several applications but for various reasons they haven’t worked out,” Roger explained. “Through no fault of his own, he’s just had some unfortunate timing.”

The hope remains that Aardvark will soon find his perfect match – someone who will embrace all the love he has to give and cherish him as the unique companion he truly is.
